Kroc Fans, help us in welcoming another Advisory Board member! As always we are very grateful for the volunteer army behind the Army that interprets community needs, advocates programs to the community, and provides support to the Army’s efforts to render effective service. We sincerely appreciate all of the hard work the Advisory Board does for The Kroc Center! This month we are highlighting Adam Martin! Adam graduated from the University of Idaho, with a BS in Business Administration and continued his education at Bellevue University, earning an MBA. He grew up in South Central Idaho and his wife Katie is a Coeur d’Alene Native, so after graduation they were excited to make Coeur d’Alene the place to start their careers and raise a family. Adam’s past experience includes five years in the banking industry and six years in various roles at Pita Pit USA. He believes The Salvation Army is a vital organization that serves as an integral part of our community. With three young children (ages 4, 5, & 7) Adam says he wants to ensure The Kroc Center continues to be a thriving facility for years to come. He is also a member of Rotary and looking to expand his community involvement. • Why did you choose to serve on The Salvation Army/Kroc Center Advisory Board? “I believe the Salvation Army is a vital organization that serves as an integral part of our community with all the programs, activities and services it offers. We are truly blessed to have this great facility in our community. With three young children, I want to ensure The Center continues to be a thriving facility for years to come.” • Which Salvation Army program or service especially resonates with you? “I’ve always been intrigued by the Red Kettle program. It’s amazing the community involvement with this program and how many donations are made in such a short amount of time. Equally impressive is how many community members this program positively impacts year after year.” Thank you Adam for serving our community in many ways! We’re happy to have you on board. . . . . . #kroccda #AdvisoryBoard #KrocAdvisoryBoard #ABSpotlight

We had a wide range of ages and relationship lengths, from 18 years to 2 years, and even two sisters who painted together! We are happy to have provided a meaningful night of connection and creativity. Kroc Fans, as you know February is Black History Month! An entire month dedicated to the history of some of those too often ignored in the history books. A month to learn about and celebrate the lives of black people who have shaped our nation in ways great and small—and to celebrate those who continue to do so. The lessons of Black History Month provide us with a way forward by examining our past, and a wise nation honors and learns from its past. We encourage you to explore the opportunities to learn more, so we have provided a list of a small handful of amazing black individuals in our country that you may not have heard of before but hold a notable moment in our nation's complex history. Visit kroccda.org to read their stories. . . . . . #kroccda #BlackHistoryMonth #BHM #CelebrateBlackHistory

Kroc Fans, we wanted to share these amazing creations from Major Ronda Gilger’s hand built pottery spoons workshop in January! While safe distances were observed, joyful connection and creativity are what will be remembered. For some the class was perfect as a mother or father/ daughter event, a “Grammie & me” class- and for others it was “couple’s time” or time out with friends. For The Kroc this was an experiment as we search for class offerings that best meet the needs for our community. We are definitely going to be working with clay again soon! . . . . . #kroccda #KrocArt #ArtWorkshop #ClayWorkshop #Clay #ClaySpoons #pottery

Kroc fans, thanks to some amazing donors, their generosity has provided the means to award up to $20,000 in continuing education scholarships! The Kroc Center is proud to facilitate three scholarship funds that help remove the financial barrier for young adults to pursue a degree from a trade, technical, or academic institution. The Markham Scholarship and Riggs Scholarship provide funding access based on the leadership contributions made by the applicants to their schools and community; The Melendez Scholarship provides funding to a Kroc Lifeguard pursuing higher education. We are immensely grateful to John Huckabay, Idaho Central Credit Union, the Melendez Family and individual donors for funding these scholarships. If you would like to apply or know someone who fits the criteria, please visit our website at kroccda.org/riggs-markham . . . . . #kroccda #Scholarships #KrocScholarships #CollegeScholarships #Markham #Riggs #Melendez #HigherEducation #ContinuingEducation #ICCU

Kroc Fans we are back to highlight another member of our Advisory Board and welcome them to the team. This month we are highlighting Michael Melendez! Mike has spent his adult life working towards helping those that are the "least of his brothers." Recently semi-retired as a physician for the past 40 years, Mike spent 20 years in Utah and the last 20 years here working throughout North Idaho. He has represented the State of Utah where he practiced for 20 years as an advisor to the US Surgeon General for health care for the poor. Mike was president of Centro de La Familia in Utah, a federally funded program for health and dental care for migrant children, and has represented physicians of North Idaho on the Idaho Board of Medicine. Mike’s family has been Kroc members since it opened in 2009. Their children participated in Kroc programs when they were young and both became Kroc Lifeguards. Their son Brendon was a lifeguard at at the time of his death in 2015. To honor their son, they started a program for Kroc Lifeguards to provide scholarships to those who are attending college. He and his wife have used the facilities at The Kroc almost every day up until the pandemic. Mike and his wife believe in the mission of The Kroc and have given donations on a regular basis to support their many projects. • Why did you choose to serve on The Advisory Board? “I wanted to use my retirement in a way to help others and the Kroc Advisory Board was a perfect fit for my dedication to community service. I have spent many years volunteering to make things better for the least of our brothers. Also, The Kroc Center has employed two of our kids when they were in high school as lifeguards. The Kroc Center reached out to help us in many ways when our college-age son died in 2015. The Salvation Army in Salt Lake City helped my brother who was homeless, so we have many reasons to do our part to help The Kroc Center. Incidentally, we have been members since it opened here and established a Kroc lifeguard scholarship fund in honor of our son.” Thank you Mike, we are proud to have you here with us! . . . #kroccda #AdvisoryBoard #KrocAdvisoryBoard #ABSpotlight

On November 17, 1957, Martin Luther King Jr. gave the famous sermon called “Loving Your Enemies” delivered at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Alabama. This sermon provided us the well-known quote above, something that feels very relevant in our recent years. We wanted to expand and share this larger portion from his speech, to enjoy more of what Dr. King had to share during this momentous sermon. --------------- “Let us move now from the practical “how” to the theoretical “why”: Why should we love our enemies? The first reason is fairly obvious. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction. So when Jesus says, "love your enemies," he is setting forth a profound and ultimately inescapable admonition. Have we not come to such an impasse in the modern world that we must love our enemies—or else? The chain reaction of evil—hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars—must be broken, or we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation.” --------------- Let us empower each other and lead with empathy, grace, and forgiveness. Love others as we love ourselves, and love others as Jesus loved us. . . . . . #kroccda #MLKDay #MartinLutherKingJr #MLKQuote #MLKDay2021

Today, Kevin is here to show us how to properly use the Back Extension machine at The Kroc. Performing the back extension exercise will increase your ability to coordinate movement through your lower back. Other improvements include a stronger back and a back that has more endurance. Overall, these positives lead to better overall back posture, important for the prevention of back injury. This piece of equipment is located downstairs in the strength area and is available to all members!
