Congratulations to Guenther Kellner, our Laboratory/Classroom Services Coordinator, on his retirement!

Guenther has been part of the Chemistry Department for well over 20 years and was beloved by students for his entertaining chemical demonstrations. He was an invaluable aspect of running the teaching labs, as he managed the inventory of chemicals and would make up any reagents that the labs needed.

He will be dearly missed here in Chemistry, but we wish him the best in his retirement!

Congrats to Sarah Keane's Lab for placing 1st in @umichlsa for the 2025 Freezer Challenge, saving an estimated 8,650 kWh of electricity per year!

The Freezer Challenge is a competition designed to promote best practices in cold storage management. U-M has thousands of freezers, which are a major contributor to our greenhouse gas emissions and energy costs. Best practices also benefit researchers directly by reducing costs and freeing up space for new samples.

The building-wide Safety Refresher Symposium this morning featured interactive sessions on topics including electrical and laser safety, needlestick precautions, biosafety best practices, chemical hygiene, pyrophoric reactions, and safe handling of harsh agents.

Our keynote speaker, Dr. Mary Beth Mulcahy, Editor-in-Chief of ACS Chemical Health & Safety, wrapped up the event with a talk titled "Influencing Chemical Safety, Guiding Tomorrow’s Science."

Thanks to all who presented and participated in these important safety sessions! #MichiganChem
