Corruption. Capitalism. Climate Change 🌎 via @teddy_ol_bean Original caption below for action items and donation sites on the last slide 👇🏾 ___ Words by @teddy_ol_bean There’s nothing funny about millions of people losing their power, and I encourage anyone who spent the last few days joking about Texas to look closely at how real this problem is. This is not just a force of nature; there are people and organizations who are directly responsible for the countless deaths this week. Primarily, ERCOT (Electric Reliability Council of Texas). ERCOT is a bit too complicated to explain in a single infographic, but basically it’s a structure that allows the electricity in Texas to be ruled by private companies with very little government oversight. This is a big problem when severe weather events happen, because these companies are more interested in saving money than saving lives. ERCOT severely underestimated the demand for energy during the storm, and as a result had to enact statewide rolling blackouts. Horrific events like this will continue to happen if we allow private companies to keep running our country and if we don’t get a handle on climate change immediately. - As always, link in my bio will take you to a more scholarly version of this infographic complete with sources and studies. ✏️

〰️ A CALL TO ACTION AGAINST ANTI-ASIAN VIOLENCE〰️ Via @edacyu. Sharing the original caption below to amplify the work of @edacyu 📚 #AlliesDoingWork stands in solidarity with the AAPI community. ・・・ UPDATE: We are humbled and shocked to have reached our goal in less than 24 hours!! We have extended our goal to $10k and will post receipts after reaching that amount or at the end of this week. Thank you all so much for contributing. —- As we approach LNY this week, this time of celebration and joy has been tainted for me by the staggering amount of anti-Asian violence in recent weeks, especially in Chinatowns and against the elderly. These attacks have been heartbreaking to read about and watch, and, in this heaviness, I’ve felt helpless and frustrated — unsure why so few people were speaking up and at a loss for how I could help. @myles.tho and I felt it was important to address those things in this collaboration — outlining the sheer volume of violence that has occurred in the last month, while providing resources for those looking for ways to take action. This list isn’t meant to be comprehensive, but we hope it illustrates the massive spike in attacks recently. We hope this piece helps educate those unfamiliar with the situation, encourage our communities to come together, and play a small part in keeping our elders safe 🧡 --- For those of you donating to our GoFundMe, we will be posting receipts for full transparency after each distribution of funds. As mentioned in the post, one of our employers will match contributions to 501(c)(3)s 1:1, so we hope to double our impact with this fundraising. Alt text is included for accessibility. Thank you to @thereezy for illustrating our fallen groceries and @ftwsammie + @taylormariecreated for helping us find meaningful orgs to direct our funds. We also appreciate @apen4ej and @jakeenbake for showing us what community looks like. #WeKeepUsSafe

〰️ ENVIRONMENTAL RACISM 〰️ Via @npr 📚💭 ・・・ Protestors attempt to block the delivery of toxic PCB waste to a landfill in Warren County, North Carolina, 1982 📍 The State placed a hazardous waste landfill in a low-income, predominantly Black area of Warren County.
