Perfect day for a hike to the C. We were super excited that students and members of UCR came out to explore an iconic part of UCR and the protected land it was on. Special thanks to Ken Halama, the UCR Natural Reserve System (NRS) director for Box Springs and Mott Rimrock Reserves for guiding us through this scenic hike. #ucredgeinstitute #hiketotheC #UCRNRS #UCNaturalReserveSystem #UCNRS

#Repost @women.doing.science (@get_repost) ・・・ Dr. Marilyn Fogel is a Distinguished Professor at UC Riverside (@ucr_edgeinstitute) studying interdisciplinary research in geoecology. After her bachelors from Penn State and PhD from University of Texas, Marilyn worked at Carnegie’s Geophysical Laboratory where she was only the second female hire. She is also the first female to be awarded geochemistry’s highest honor, the Alfred Tribe’s medal. Marilyn uses a wide range of expertise, including biology, chemistry, geology and astrobiology, to study the distinctive isotopes of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, and nitrogen in modern and fossilized organic matter. Her research has taken her all over the world, including the Australian deserts, the Sargasso Sea in the Bermuda Triangle, and the Mars-like island of Svalbard north of Norway. Marilyn’s research demonstrates that we can learn a lot about our past, present and future world through the vast reservoir of the remains of living organisms beneath Earth’s surface – from predictions about climate change into the next century to understanding how life on the planet began and the ancient organisms that once lived here. Marilyn recently started an online blog chronicling her stories as a woman in STEM over the decades and her insights as an isotope geochemist (www.isotopequeen.blogspot.com). . . . #womendoingscience #womeninstem #womenwhoscience #geology #ecology #isotopes #geobiology #geochemistry #femaleprofessor #scicomm #research #chemistry @uofcalifornia @ucriversideofficial @ucr_edgeinstitute
