EMA’s Director Spotlight of the Quarter is Jamie Eng, MD! 🩺 Rosalind Franklin School of Medicine – MD 🥼LAC-USC EM – Residency training, Chief Dr. Eng got her start doing clinical research and became a doctor to pursue more direct patient care. According to Dr. Eng, she chose emergency medicine because the fast pace suited her personality. Her favorite part of working for EMA is that she has been able to work at some amazing sites with awesome coworkers. She highly respects each and every single one of them: “What we do isn’t easy, and they are very reassuring to have around.” Prior to becoming the Director of EMA and Benchmark’s Fellowship Program, Dr. Eng was an EMA fellow herself! Outside of work, Dr. Eng’s passions include traveling, camping, yoga, art, baking/cooking, and eating. She also enjoys family time with her husband Jeff, and her 3 children she affectionately refers to as “wildlings”. If she had to sum up her work in one sentence, she says she is: “Trying to do the right thing most of the time but doing it with a very short temper and foul language.”

EMA’s AHP Spotlight of the Quarter is Eric Soto, PA! Eric Soto has been with EMA since 2015. As a PA, Eric enjoys the constant growth of emergency medicine: "I am always curious of new practices that are constantly evolving in medicine. I find point of care ultrasound becoming a large part of my practice and find myself using it more frequently, which I see as a valuable instrument in the Emergency Department." He also values the bond he has grown with the doctors, nurses, and other allied health care team members. Eric says that the Emergency Department staff is a small group and they make you feel like family. A Las Vegas native, Eric attended Crafton Hills College and Stanford University's Physician Assistant Program. His early curiosity in science piqued his interest in medicine, leading him to pursue a Radiology Program at Crafton Hills College and continuing on to become a PA. He became interested in emergency medicine during his rotations in his final months as a Physician Assistant student. He says, "I was able to appreciate the abilities, and the wealth of knowledge and experience that needs to be acquired to be able to manage any, and all patients that come through the Emergency Department." He continues to appreciate the constant change and learning experiences that come with the job. Outside of work, when not spending time with his wife and two sons, he loves going to the beach, hiking, cycling, traveling, exploring new food, and watching 80's and 90's movies.

Happy Valentine’s Day! Not only is today a day of hearts, it’s also a day that recognizes giving hearts. National Donor Day is a time to focus on all types of donation – organ, eye, tissue, blood, platelets and marrow –by participating in blood/marrow drives or donor registration events. It is also a day to recognize our loved ones who have given the gift of donation, have received a donation, are currently waiting or did not receive an organ in time. Link to donor registration page

Happy Black History Month! In honor of this special month, we would like to recognize all the African American healthcare workers that have revolutionized medicine and the healthcare industry. One of the most notable, Rebecca Crumpler, MD, became the first female African American MD in 1864, treating freed slaves after the Civil War and publishing one of the first medical books written by an African American.
