• Who We Support

House of Hope, Bethlehem, Israel

House of Hope creates a positive influence in the lives of the blind and children with special needs in such a way that it enables them to be an effective part of their community. The goal of House of Hope is to foster a sense of value. The staff aim to help each child grow in their abilities, get an education, learn new life skills or find a place of employment. Many of the students, now adults in age, remain in the home as there is no place else for them to go. “We are a big family… we live as a family,” says Salim. Jaafar, for example, still lives at House of Hope. He started as young boy and is now 42, still goes to classes to study and works in the factory. The older, blind children learn to work in the broom factory and others, once the teacher has used the machinery, are taught how to finish the olive wood.

Salim, when asked why he does what he does, stated that as a graduate from Bethlehem Bible College he learned that he must help people. Though he is director of House of Hope and his work is to help people who have needs with no one to care for them, he does this, not as an employee, but as an individual who is concerned. He prays that God will give the children the Holy Spirit to heal them and to create a miracle for them. “Christianity is very important because this a Christian house. Christian people oversee this house. This house is for God,” concludes Salim.

  • Who We Support

House of Hope, Bethlehem, Israel

Paul Calvert writes from Jerusalem: “I do a devotion every Wednesday at the House of Hope with the kids. I have been going to the House of Hope for the past 16 years. It has had its ups and downs and I think last year was a difficult time with one thing and another.
They have brought in a new director Salim Zeidan. I have known Salim from the other school I speak at. He is also a leader in the scout movement. Salim is a True believer and he has a heart for God and for the kids. I can see over the last 6 months or so how he has turned the House of Hope around. I am personally encouraged by what he is doing. He genuinely loves the kids and wants to see spiritual growth.” Please consider helping: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/m/13281/donation

  • Who Are We?

Worldwide Children’s Fund is a small organization based in the Vancouver area.

Our work is a continuation of the work begun by Rev. Bernice Gerard and Velma Chapman.

Bernice’s radio ministry “Sunday Line” was a well-known feature for years in the Vancouver area.

In later years she had a long running television program by the same name.

Some of the guests on the broadcasts were running ministries to the poor in various parts of the world.

Over time, listeners and viewers began sending support specifically designated to these efforts.

Sunday Line gradually morphed into an organization which supported various ministries who helped the poorest children.

The current board of Sunday Line Communications/Worldwide Children’s Fund are local leaders, some of whom have direct connections to the ministry of Bernice and Velma.

I came to faith at the Fraserview Assembly through Bernice and Velma’s ministry.

I was discipled in ministry by Bernice and Velma and served as Associate Pastor at the church and Operations Manager for Sunday Line Television and Radio for many years.

Others on the board are local pastors and leaders.

Roman Kozak is a Pastor in White Rock and worked with Bernice and Velma directly for many years.

Brent Demchuk is a pastor and church planter in Surrey.

Ron Marriot serves with Union Gospel Mission in the Vancouver area.

Kory Sorensen is an experienced Not-for-Profit leader and directs Not for Profit studies at Summit Pacific College in Abbotsford.

Mike Brownlee is the Director of Metro Kids Society in Surrey.

We are not a large organization compared to many of the well-known aid organizations.

However, we continue in the footsteps of our founders and embrace their vision

  • Spotlight: Who We Support

The House of Hope in Bethlehem was started in 1963 by a blind local Christian Arab named Aunty May. It continues by the goodness of God through his people. House of Hope relies on the prayers, help of the volunteers, and financial support to meet the spiritual, physical and financial needs and to enable the House of Hope to serve others.

Those working at House of Hope create a positive influence in the lives of the blind and children with special needs in such a way that will enable them to be an effective part of their community. “Without this organization to care for them,” says present director Salim Zaidan in a recent video clip*, “They would be on the street, maybe doing difficult or dangerous or bad things.” The children, both Christian & Muslim, are happy together. Every day they sing Christian songs, pray together, and read from the Bible. Once a month they have a special activity outside of the home. “The children are very happy to come here,” continues Salim. “Every month at the end of the month they send the children to visit the family but they love to stay here because we give them love - more than the family.” Consider partnering with us and supporting this amazing ministry.

Cathedral of Praise in Manila, Philippines

Worldwide Children’s Fund helped fund the Gerard Chapman Kitchen which operates in one of Manila's poorest neighborhoods.

Branching out from one stable, central location has made a huge difference in the daily feeding program. Now 2000 children are fed every single day, rain, shine, storm or cloudless skies. The children learn a memory verse and learn to pray. The daily, consistent presence in the area has received the attention of some local businesses, schools and hospitals. Some hospital s are now partnering to provide medical services and some businesses doing special things for the children as part of their social responsibility program.

Five year old Cindy lives in Happy Land, near the break water, and is a recipient of the daily manna feeding program. Her mother, Michelle, works as a house helper and is seldom at home during the day. Her stepfather is a fisherman and is able to stretch his money just enough to buy milk for the children. Cindy cares for her 2 year old sister and 1 year old brother, bathing and feeding them. There isn't always food in the house and sometimes the neighbor will bring food to her. Cindy always feeds her brother and sister first and then herself, if there is enough. With the daily feeding, a nutritious meal now comes to her house each day. She knows that each day there will be food and this puts a smile on her little face.

Volunteers from Cathedral of Praise claim that they soon become addicted to the few, special hours they spend with the children during the feeding program. Once you arrive, kids will take you by the hand, they know the routine; they know what to do. Young Rose, for example, a deaf mute, always carries her school card to the feeding so she can communicate her name with the volunteers. She loves to help distribute the food and see the joy on the kid's faces that are lined up and waiting

  • Spotlight: Who We Support

Cathedral of Praise in Manila Philippines
Worldwide Children’s Fund helped fund the Gerard Chapman Kitchen which operates in one of Manila's poorest neighborhoods.

Since the later part of 2015, we have been focused in one massive area of Manila called "Happy Land." Believe me when I say there is nothing happy about Happy Land. It is a slang word taken from a Filipino word naming the area. Sewerage flows freely all over the ground we walk on. Those living in make-shift shanties are considered the blessed ones. Children live on the streets. When asked when their birthday is they have no idea; no idea how old they are. They simply exist. And existence in Happy Land is a rough and tumble, day-to-day struggle. Disease and malnutrition runs rampant.

Jonas found out that not all the children in the neighborhood are happy and running to the feeding. On the floor of one of the buildings, under his grandmother's care, he found 2 year old Justin despondent and laying on the floor. He had been sick for 2 weeks. Jonas prayed for him, gave him food and watched the strength begin to creep back into his body.

David, a volunteer from one of the singing groups, commented, "It is a reality check. All the poverty stories could come from here: streets completely covered with muddy garbage, sacks of plastic, refuse tied to the walls and waiting for collection, parents separating leftovers from soggy cardboard boxes, kids too weak and too sick to run to go to the feeding." Yet, these are the ones Jesus loves. The ones he was looking at when he told the disciples to feed the 5000; the ones who moved Him with compassion.

  • SPOTLIGHT – WHO WE SUPPORT

Cathedral of Praise in Manila, Philippines

David and Beverley Sumrall have pastored the Cathedral of Praise in Manila for over 30 years. They are recognized for their pioneering achievements in organizational church leadership structure through home-based Bible studies, regular pastoral visitation, strong evangelism programs, world-standard Bible and Music Colleges and cutting-edge praise and worship and Christian arts ministries.

Worldwide Children’s Fund helped fund the Gerard Chapman Kitchen which operates in one of Manila's poorest neighbourhoods.

So, for several years now, they have been feeding 2,200 children every morning with a hot nutritious meal, cooked on site, at the Gerard-Chapman Benevolence Kitchen, in Tondo, Metro Manila. All meals are cooked and packaged there, then taken to Happy Land and Aroma neighbourhoods for distribution. The children are taught memory verse songs from the Bible and if there are adults involved in their lives, they are taught the Word of God as well. Thee bought an old container van and turned it into a make shift chapel on Sundays and a Medical Clinic on Saturdays. Members from the church manage this clinic and church young people preach the gospel every Sunday and hold children's church for the kids.

A few years ago when a super storm hit the center of the country, they made the most amazing discovery. One of the relief organizations they worked with was giving what they call "manna packs" - a box of rice/soy based meals that simply could be cooked with water. One box had enough packs in it to last a family for 30 days.

As a result, they have seen children now walking, talking, reaching, studying, learning - all because of daily nutrition! When they first went to the area they found kids who were hostile, sad, and with dark and dull eyes. Now these same kids come running every morning with joy on their faces and light in their eyes. The transformation is astounding. They are flourishing at school and passing their classes.

  • Who Are We?

Worldwide Children’s Fund is a small organization based in the Vancouver area.
We are a ministry of Sunday Line Communications. Our work is a continuation of what was started by our founders Rev. Bernice Gerard and Velma Chapman.

Bernice’s radio ministry “Sunday Line” was a well-known feature for years in the Vancouver area.
Sunday Line gradually morphed into an organization which in part supported various ministries in the world who helped the poorest children.

When the television and radio broadcasts ceased, Bernice and Velma decided to continue with an emphasis on helping these ministries which help needy children world wide.

During the years of radio and television ministries there were many guests. A good number of these guests were people who were running ministries to the poor in various parts of the world.

Several of these ministries particularly targeted the poorest children.

Over time, listeners and viewers began sending support specifically designated to these efforts.

We continue in the footsteps of our founders and embrace their vision.

  • Who we support:

Classrooms for Africa provides assistance to communities in Eastern and Southern Africa who have taken on the challenge of providing education for disadvantaged children. Classrooms for Africa is a unique and realistic 21st Century approach to breaking the cycle of poverty that plagues much of sub-Saharan Africa. We believe that by focusing on supporting the education of future generations a significant improvement can be made in people’s lives and communities can be changed.
The basic building block of the program is the single classroom. The cost of delivering a single, functional, permanent classroom for 30-50 African children averages around $11,500 Canadian. Because of the program, thousands of children have been given the opportunity to attend school and with it the prospect of a brighter future. If you are looking for something meaningful this Christmas, Classrooms for Africa is a great opportunity.
