School of Leadership and Human Resource Development Associate Professor, Dr. Petra A. Robinson, recently traveled to Havana, Cuba to participate in The Association of Black Sexologists and Clinicians 2019 International Lecture Series. Along with her co-presenter, Dr. Paula Barbel, Associate Professor at the College at Brockport, State University of New York, Dr. Robinson presented findings from her paper, Contesting Traditional Gender Roles among Men who Bleach in Jamaica. These findings were based on a qualitative study which sought to explore contemporary cultural constructions of masculinity in Jamaicans through the nuanced lens of the skin bleaching practice. Analysis of rich data from open-ended interviews with men and women bleachers revealed evidence of colorism and a distinct preference for light skin among both males and females. The study’s findings suggest a mushrooming, complex contestation to the traditional Jamaican gender framework especially for men as it relates to sexuality, attraction, and beauty. The study also has implications for conceptions of gender among other communities of color in other countries. Dr. Robinson’s and Dr. Barbel’s work also have direct implications for health, media, financial, and other contemporary critical literacy development.
