FOCUS WORK 1:1 LABORATORY Comte/Meuwly × Débora Mesa Molina
A joint Focus Work exploring the potential of the new Workshop HIL C 45.1 at ETH Zurich.
We approach architecture through 1:1 experimentation, material testing, and full-scale making—treating prototyping as research rather than final form. Students are invited to work hands-on with materials, embrace failure as part of the process, and develop open-ended architectural propositions grounded in construction.
Across a shared framework with Comte/Meuwly and Mesa, projects evolve through collective reviews, iterative making, and cross-media exploration (physical, digital, audiovisual).
📍 Focus: architecture as making, testing, and transformation. 🛠 Workshop-based, hands-on, experimental. 🌱 Ecological and material intelligence at the core.
📅 June 2026 – January 2027 📍 HIL C45.1 Workshop, ETH Zurich 📩 Application deadline: 8 May 2026

HS 2025 - 2nd year BA - Ready-Unmade HIL
This first semester at ETH was centered on the act of doing - and undoing. Whether it’s our chair and teaching practice, our studio space in HIL G65, or the HIL building itself, everything is in a state of construction and reconsideration. We explore the potential of overlooked materials, repurpose standard elements to create nonstandard structures, and find beauty in the imperfect objects that surround us.

What does it mean to inhabit the Earth today? How can architecture respond to the urgency of building more with less.
Less material, less energy, less space while offering more meaning, more connection and more possibility?

MESA Workbench
The MESA Workbench is a sturdy table designed to provide a stable surface for a wide range of manual and collaborative activities—such as cutting, measuring, casting, discussing, reviewing, drilling, presenting, celebrating, assembling, prototyping, testing, thinking, sketching, drawing, constructing, modeling, writing, and reflecting.
The concept is based on a simple, modular plug-in system in which the elements interlock without the need for screws, glue, or nails. Each component is precisely cut, ensuring that no leftover material is generated. This allows the table to be assembled and disassembled easily, without the use of tools.
The modular system enables multiple uses and configurations, allowing different table setups to be created in just a few seconds.
We would like to thank @martizuerich , whose generous support through the provision of formwork panels made it possible to develop this table system and provide a flexible workspace for our students.
