Sometimes there’s so much good stuff going on with clients that I don't even know where to start, and I end up sharing none of it. So here's a dram of good news for today: This week, a client taught her first workshop for her Homecoming Career. Yes, she not only discovered her Homecoming Career but TAUGHT A WORKSHOP about it while she's still in the program. Because once you know, it feels good to take action. So inspired by her!
What color is your career change hamster wheel? Almost *everyone* in career change limbo repeats one or more destructive patterns that keeps them stuck instead of moving them forward. Here are some common hues: 1. Bouncing between creative careers and “practical” ones 2. Settling for jobs that are “good enough” 3. Repeating a family pattern of playing it safe 4. Being excited to start something new, but once the novelty wears off you realize you’re repeating the same disaster with a new set of characters 5. Chronic dabbling: Taking courses in things that interest you, doing some informational interviews, doing a handful of sessions with a career counselor, sort-of starting a business 6. Putting off making a change until a work project or life milestone is complete (but there’s always another one) 7. Giving so much at work that you burnout, get resentful, quit, and do it all over again someplace new 8. Accepting whatever gets offered instead of intentionally choosing a direction 9. Applying for the kinds of jobs you already know you won’t like 10. Choosing what will make other people happy (like your parents) instead of what will make you happy 11. Staying too long at a place that’s not a good fit because you don’t want to let people down 12. Applying for what you’ve already done because you don’t know what else you’d be qualified for 13. Choosing roles for their prestige 14. Hoping that someone will hire you for a role that you don’t even feel confident you could do 15. Applying for jobs because they’re low hanging fruit, not because they’d fulfill you DM if any of these sound familiar and you're ready to get off the hamster wheel.
Just got off the monthly call I host for alums of Your Career Homecoming and my heart is bursting! 💗 They are doing so well and I love staying connected to see them take flight. Knowing what you want to do is one thing, but going out there and doing it — shifting into a new identify, building new relationships, putting yourself out there in a bigger way, claiming the value of your work, those awkward first steps of starting before it’s perfect — we prep for that in the program but to see them do it is beyond satisfying. I’m proud of them and inspired by them. To my current clients and alums: You’re the reason I wake up excited to work each day. You are doing what you once thought was impossible, and that’s always worth getting out of bed for. 💖
Cried happy tears for an alum of Your Career Homecoming today. He just received his first paycheck from the non-profit he started, teaching meditation in prisons. He is doing life-changing work, and he is getting paid to do it.
I created Your Career Homecoming because I tried all the advice, books, and assessments and they didn’t work for me. If it made money, my heart wasn’t in it. If my heart was in it, it would take over my life. Once I figured out a new way to approach career change, where you get to have a life, earn the money you need, use your strengths, and do something that makes a real difference, I wanted to create a repeatable process that would be effective for people who craved meaningful work. I never forget what it was like to feel lost and not have a plan. And I’ll never quit reminding you that there is more you than you’ve been told. There is a Homecoming Career for you. It’s just waiting for you to find it.
It’s here! 🍾 I hope you’ll celebrate with me and visit the all new Your Career Homecoming website. Today has me thinking of how directionless and anxious I was before I found my career home. It’s an absolute joy and honor to help people discover and start their meaningful careers. If you know someone who could use some guidance, I hope you’ll share it with them, too. Head to the journal for a behind-the-scenes look at what the new changes are, why I made them, and the dream team that made it all happen. Thank you, @anthemcreativeco @aliharper @ginnybranch @katehutcheson!
Today is the day...not too much longer! I woke up a wee bit early and a wee bit excited to show you what we've been keeping secret since the beginning of the year.
