With so much of life flipped upside down over the last few months, so many of us have been living life through screens even more than we used to, and I don’t know about you, but it’s definitely taken a toll. All the extra screen time combined with my goal to simplify all aspects of my life this year led me to pick up Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport earlier this year. In some respects, he was preaching to the choir, because my awareness of the negative impacts of too much connectedness has only increased in recent years. Even still, it caused me to think seriously about my use of technology and whether it produces positive results in my life. The philosophy is of digital minimalism is this: “A philosophy of technology use in which you focus your online time on a small number of carefully selected and optimized activities that strongly support things you value, and then happily miss out on everything else.” It might sound a bit radical and that’s because, in our overconnected culture, it is! But the positive benefits of it are probably more than any of us could imagine. To kickstart life as a digital minimalist, Newport suggests doing a “digital declutter.” In my opinion, it would be better labeled a “digital detox” for many people, because it’s a 30-day time period where you remove all optional technologies from your life. These are defined as anything meant to entertain, connect, or inform you that would not have a significant negative impact on your personal or professional life by removing them. You can probably guess what’s coming next... starting tomorrow, my husband and I are doing our own digital declutter! For the next 30 days, we are removing optional technologies, with the hope that on the other side, our use of technology will be carefully selected, optimized, and in support of things we value. We jumped into the second half of the year on Wednesday with the start of a new month and a new quarter and I'M jumping into a new year of business in just a couple of days... so what better way to celebrate than a BRAND NEW WEBSITE?! 😱⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My word for 2020 is "simplify" and I spent most of Q2 head down working super hard at simplifying and streamlining the business. When I made the decision to FULLY transition to being product-based, I knew that meant it was time to give my online home a true overhaul!
