As fast as the news has traveled, it’s likely old news to you now that a photographer got fired (yesterday?) due to her views on being a decent human being. Essentially, a couple fired her after a BLM post, which - not that it matters- was super low key. This photographer clearly has a diverse portfolio and walks the walk, so her post was simply a verbal and visual affirmation of “I’m with you.” Her response was BOSS. She basically said “the deposit is non-refundable, but thank you for your donation to BLM” 🔥 Since then, her audience has DOUBLED and I’m sure in the next 24 hours it will double again. She has the complete backing and support of the wedding industry. She took 30 seconds to send a powerful message of allyship. And the amount of people wanting to book her for it, is staggering. She didn’t do it for PR or bookings. The point is that doing the right thing comes back tenfold. If ever your bills scare you, and you feel stuck- be reminded, we have your back. I’m slowly recovering from surgery last Tuesday. Hence why I’ve been so quiet around here. I finally got a little energy yesterday and hope to get caught up by tomorrow. That being said, I’ve spent any energy I do have diving into #unitythroughcommunity conversations, and then of course my little family. I’m so grateful for all the many collaborations that have taken place this week to educate and motivate. I know we have many more big conversations ahead of us and as always, I’m here for it. Yesterday, in FB, I asked Refiners what they have been learning and I was so proud of those willing to humbly share about growing pains. So I want to ask here, too!! What have you learned this last week? We all want love. We all understand the need for kindness. But what actions are you taking? I’ll post a few of my actions in the comments.
We have a lot of new faces here so I want to welcome each and every one of you. At the same time, I want to make Refine’s stance on racial injustice very clear in case you’ve not caught it over time in conversation or previous posts. Refine believes that Black Lives Matter and that sure, while “all lives matter” may be a true sentiment, it’s not the point of the current conversation. If I were at a breast cancer fundraiser, I would not march in seeking advancement for colon cancer awareness. I’d simply join the conversation about breast cancer and do all I could for the moment it was having and needing. While being color blind sounds loving and good, it dismisses the beautiful differences we have and should celebrate. It also dismisses the pain and trauma that a people group has experienced for centuries. The more loving response is to SEE color and call out systemic bias that continues to oppress. I’ve dropped some teasers in the FB group that some changes are coming for Refine and one of those involves who is and isn’t a member of our community. I’ll be asking members to self-regulate their continued involvement in Refine by several (ideal client) parameters I put into place, and this will be one of them. Refine isn’t for everyone, and I’m okay with that. But if anything, Refine is a place where Black Lives Matters and despite having made that clear in the past, I’m committed to doing more with this conversation, on an ongoing basis.
