Press release from protesters at St. Thomas City Hall today: “A gathering of concerned citizens from across this region left their rubber boots at the steps of St. Thomas city hall to voice their dismay at our MPP, Jeff Yurek's, and the Ontario government's intention to pass Bill 229 early in December. In this omnibus bill is Schedule 6 which will gut the authority of our Conservation Authorities and make it near impossible for them to protect our wetlands and watersheds from developers.” We did reach out to Jeff Yurek’s office and received this statement: “For the past year and a half, our government has been consulting on the role of Conservation Authorities. Our proposed changes would make sure conservation authorities are focused on delivering the programs they were designed to deliver, like flood mitigation, protecting sources of drinking water, and managing conservation-authority owned lands. Municipalities would also have more say over the services they pay for, and boards would be required to be more transparent in the decisions they make. To be clear, there would be no change to the criteria, standards, definitions, and rules that protect and preserve Ontario’s natural spaces. Any suggestion otherwise is completely false. In the coming weeks, the ministry will be developing and consulting on upcoming regulations under the Conservation Authorities Act. We will consider the feedback as we move forward.”

Did you know that on your birthday @dennyscanada will make sure you get a “build your own” Grand Slam breakfast? Our friend, Dr. Laura Bolt has been availing herself of their generosity for years and is very exuberant that @dennys_st_thomas is now open. Asked for a few words today after breakfast, Dr. Bolt had this to say “Any day that starts with Denny’s breakfast is a good day.” #stthomasproud #somuchmorelife #explorerailwaycity #dennys

Episode 49 of the Railway City Mayor’s Update is now live! Today Mayor Joe Preston, @bubbajp4, talked about where we are at with the COVID-19 outbreak and what steps the city has taken to address it. * One of the main take-aways today is please don’t call 911 if it isn’t an emergency. Our frontline workers are holding strong for us, and need to be consistently able to continue to serve our community. If you are able to support your neighbours through kind conversations or calling the St. Thomas’s customer service line when there are non-emergency situations, this will allow our emergency services to best work for us. Thanks to everyone staying strong and working to help us get through this! #ywsstrong #stthomasproud #elginstrong #stthomas #covid19 #mayorsupdate #railwaycity

#ARTsolation Stay connected through art. What we’re working on is curating an online art project using the hashtag #artsolation. We’re living in a surreal time where our day to day lives have been completely altered and instead of following our calendar into the events we had planned in the world we’re planning how to spend our time at home. As artists, during this time of isolation, we can stay connected by creating and sharing our work with our community. Join us and join the conversation by tagging your instagram posts with the hashtag #artsolation. Whether it’s through visual art, dance, music, theatre, flower arrangement, poetry - or any of the arts - make a post and share it. We look forward to seeing all the creations, but we can’t tag everyone - so please help spread the word by tagging people for us! Other people around the world have already begun using this hashtag so your posts will join a worldwide artistic conversation. Each week we will select several local pieces to feature in an Art Beat post. Thanks to our partners in this project: @stepartcentre, @sbecinnovation, @railwaycitytourism, Van Pelt’s Business Solutions, and @laingstudios.

#SleeplessInOurCity - Sleeping in a car can make for one of the longest nights of your life. It’s uncomfortable, difficult and cold—and for some of our neighbours, it’s an everyday reality. That’s why @unitedwayemca asked the community to support local volunteers – your friends, colleagues and neighbours—as they spend the night in their cars to fight poverty in our region. Tonight in St. Thomas, on Feb. 20, at 7:30 p.m. our community united against homelessness. Also, you can still visit the site to pledge your support, and join the fight! unitedwayem.ca/event/sioc #SleeplessInOurCity #ElginMiddlesex #UNIGNORABLE #JoinTheFight #DoGooder #StThomasProud #LocalLove #ChangeMaker
