In a therapy session this morning, we were talking about the sneaky little habit of perfectionism. I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase that perfectionism is procrastination. But very often, perfectionism also becomes self-sabotage. Here’s how I like to think about this... Any pattern of behavior that continues in your life serves a purpose. If there was no purpose, the pattern wouldn’t persist. Period. If you find yourself caught in a pattern of perfectionism-related procrastination or self-sabotage, you have to get curious and dig in... ask yourself, “How is this serving me?” You’ll find when you dig in, that underneath the surface, your perfectionism is protective... Maybe you’re afraid you’ll fail, so you don’t really try and label it perfectionism... Maybe you’re terrified of the judgment of others, so to avoid that vulnerability, you heap tons of judgment on yourself first and label it perfectionism... I don’t know exactly what it is for you - only you can answer that - but it starts by having the courage to ask yourself (and honestly answer) the tough questions. Next time you notice this pattern, instead of brushing it off as “oh, I’m a perfectionist...” ask yourself “What purpose is this pattern serving for me?” and “What am I really afraid of?” and finally, “How can I make this feel safer?” #notesfromtherapy #selfcareredefined #mentalheathawareness #mentalhealth #perfectionism #mindsetmatters

We’re just over a third of the way through #75hard. One of the concepts I share with my clients is the concept of “wellness in service to purpose.” In a nutshell, wellness in service to purpose acknowledges and honors the guiding truth that whatever it is that’s important to you requires that you BE the best version of you. The only way to bring the best version of you to your work, your family, your mission, is by learning how to consistently and intentionally take the best care of yourself. So, for me... it’s safe to say that I found myself in a season in which my wellness was not in balance. That’s normal, so if you can relate, don’t judge yourself for that. It’s what you do with that information when you become aware of it, that matters. Matt and I agreed that the season of not doing enough for ourselves in the wellness realm needed to end so we decided to take the 75 Hard challenge. I’m really mindful that 75 Hard is an over correction... other things are being de-prioritized because we are committed to this challenge. At the same time, it feels so good to have this season to re-focus and re-prioritize physical health and well-being and there are definitely habits I am building that I plan to sustain when the challenge is over. How do you practice wellness in service to purpose?
