• TW: eating disorder behaviours.

As a child I used to eat some Easter egg and then save the rest for tomorrow and the next day. Some day's I would eat more and some day's I'd eat less.

The first time I remember feeling like I couldn't stop eating chocolate was an Easter egg.

I kept wrapping it up in the foil, then going back for another piece. Wrap it up. Go back. Until I had eaten the whole thing. I couldn't stop thinking about it while it was still there to be eaten!

Context: I was 19. I'd been dieting to 'look good' as a bridesmaid at my cousin's wedding in the February. I was eating low calories and writing down everything to make sure I didn't go over.

The first time I (tried to) purge was a Lindt chocolate bunny.

Context: I was 20. I'd been travelling around Australia for 6 weeks and had gained some weight. I was desperate to lose it, so I started eating 'healthy' which at the time meant only fruit, salad/veggies and protein.

I was still living in Australia and my grandma had sent me a package with Easter chocolates (because UK chocolate tastes different to Australian). I let myself have a bit of chocolate. Which turned into me eating the whole bunny, panicking and trying to get rid of it, but nothing would come out.

This year, my grandma bought me an egg (even though I'm 30) 😍 and I ate it a few weeks ago! It was yummy. It took me a few days to finish it and I really enjoyed it.

TAKE HOME MESSAGE: It's not the chocolate to blame for your behaviour, it's your rules around that food.

I believe that you can eat chocolate every day as part of a varied diet (diet as in the food you eat not a set of rules).

Restricting certain foods can lead to bingeing (or perceived bingeing - if you ate more than you thought you 'should').

Planning to purge can also lead to over consuming foods or bingeing. But know that making yourself sick or taking laxatives is incredibly damaging for your body and you're not getting rid of all the calories.

And Easter is only a few days 🐰🍫 If you're struggling with the food aspect, then know Easter will be over soon.

If you're really scared about the chocolate/food, what can you choose to focus on instead?

  • Do you eat mindfully?

Is it something that's natural for you or something you're trying to implement?

Things to remember

💛 be kind to yourself if you're in the process of learning to eat more mindfully - it can take practice.

💛 you don't EVER need to be 'perfect' at it. And there's probably no perfect anyway. Just do the best you can in the situation you find yourself.

💛 mindful eating has been coopted by people promoting diets/weight loss, BUT true mindful eating is focused on the process not a goal (such as weightloss).

💛 mindful eating might not be helpful for you if you're in recovery from an eating disorder!!
