Here is what #OurTime2019🌅 organizer Emma felt when she woke up to smoke filled skies in Edmonton Alberta at the heart of the tar sands -- it's not fun to politicize disasters in the midst of them but it's no longer an option not to. i took this photo around noon today in edmonton. they're of an elementary school near my house. it's a place that reminds me of the hell we're living in. . last summer, on august 15th, 2018, i woke up to the same smell of smoke pouring through my apartment window. those living in #yeg will remember that morning— the sky was the same apocalyptic orange it is today. . there were 559 active wildfires burning in B.C that day. i know this because i scrawled it in a notebook beside my bed that morning. . that morning, i walked past this same school. i distinctly remember a kid on a tricycle came speeding around the corner wearing a ninja turtles helmet. . he stopped abruptly in front of me to shake his head back squinting up at the sky. i remember from his reaction that it was as if he was just noticing the sky for the first time that day. the second he was gone, i burst into tears. i was reminded of how just a year prior the director of a daycare in Fort Mac had told me about how the smoky skies and donation trucks rumbling through town, gathering donations for BC evacuees, were triggering the kids in town. . fossil fuel executives and every. single. politician complicit with the status quo are responsible for this. and it's time we held them accountable. . i refuse to let corporate execs hold my future hostage and i refuse to let days like this become that kid's normal. -- Emma Jackson, #OurTime2019 organizer. .
