The York Botanic Art Prize is a collaboration between the York branch of the Wildflower Society of WA and Gallery 152. The $7500 first prize was sponsored by the Wildflower Society of Western Australia, with the aim of inspiring and encouraging interest and engagement with WA's extraordinary wildflowers. First prize was awarded to Kirsten Hudson pictured with the Hon Darren West MLC with her entry, Requiem (Kalyakoorl). Said the judges: "As the inaugural winner of the York Botanic Art Prize, Kirsten Hudson's work Requiem (Kalyakoorl) impressed on so many levels. At a time when many of us are turning our work and interests towards the local, this four minute film perfectly encapsulates how creativity can be utilised to investigate matters of profound complexity. By examining the full life cycle of a planting of everlastings in her backyard, this iconic WA species has become the perfect portal through which both art and science are embraced – the hallmarks of all great botanic art. Where this work expands the genre however, is that it has employed time as a medium, and evolution across deep time is a distinctive characteristic of Western Australian ecosystems with some of the oldest flowering plant lineages on earth. By planting strips of 16 mm film along with Western Australian everlasting seeds, the artist has set up a symbiotic relationship between the two, and the film stock has acquired a striking amount of detail that takes us inside the hidden processes of growth and decay of these plants and exposes the hidden world of soil organisms. Not only has the work captured the minutiae that is so important in botanical science, but the ground-breaking methodology makes it a striking example of contemporary art practice." judges; Gregory Pryor, Helen Turner, Professor Kingsley Dixon and Angela Stewart. The award for the $500 People's Choice was shared by Elizabeth Edmonds for 'Modong Weathered by Elements' and Jason McDonald (details pictured here).
