Since 1984, wordsmiths and thespians have put down their scripts to battle it out on the cricket pitch to raise money for the Victorian Actors' Benevolent Trust. This year the battle will also be fought through classic fairground games like sack and wheelbarrow races. Catering will be provided with a free BBQ for Equity and Australian Writers Guild members (gold coin donation for everyone else, with proceeds going to VABT and Wildlife Victoria). There will be a raffle with fantastic prizes. Find out more at https://www.meaa.org/events/actors-v-writers-cricket-match/ ##meaaequity

New Zealand Prime Minister @jacindaardern is on a mission to change the perception that “the arts is simply nice to have”. It’s critical to “our sense of identity, our wellbeing, enacting our conscience on issues”, she says. Ardern says her priorities as arts minister are to “create wider access for our communities, and sustainable careers”. Jacinda Ardern gets it that art matters. It's a pity the Australian government doesn't. Swing Day celebrates the role of the unsung heroes who keep theatrical productions going for weeks or months on end by playing a multitude of roles to relieve principal cast members, sometimes with very short notice. Put simply, if there were no swings, the show would not go on. Watch the video to find out more about the work that swings do and share your own swing team pictures with the hashtags #SwingDay #EquityTeamSwing #MEAAequity. *You’ll need to turn on sound for this. The bushfires sweeping across Australia are distressing for all of us and it is important to look after both your physical and mental health at this time. If you feel you could use some help, there are resources and advice available on the wellness portal on our website: meaa.org/campaigns/equity-wellness And if you have suffered financial loss, you may be eligible for assistance from a benevolent fund in your state: meaa.org/benefits/benevolent-and-support-funds/ Importantly, also share this information with anyone you know who may be experiencing difficulties and have limited communication or access to news/social media. #MEAAequity
Andrew Crowley has been appointed Director of #MEAAEquity following a year and half as Deputy Director during which time he was intimately involved in #MEAAEquity’s key campaigns and negotiations. Andrew has been a proud Equity member since 2000 and has worked as a performer in theatre, television, commercials and regional and schools tours. Beyond his performance work, Andrew completed a law degree and worked extensively in commercial practice before joining the Equity team. We are thrilled to welcome Andrew to his new role at MEAA.
The Arts delivers huge economic value but most importantly it's the heart of our culture, our community and our humanity. The decision by the Morrison government to axe the Department of the Arts from February 1 next year is symbolic of its wilful neglect and lack of respect for the arts. Join us to take action and win respect for the Arts (link in bio). #ArtMatters #MEAAequity #MEAAcrew #MEAAmusicians #MEAAsoma

We are in mourning today at the death of Anne Phelan, aged 71 - a much-loved performer and passionate activist for her profession, for her industry and for her union. #MEAAequity federal president Chloe Dallimore said: Anne was simply one of the best humans. She was a lauded actor for her incredible body of work in our industry, but most importantly, a woman with a huge zest for life and a deep love for her union. Anne was an Equity member for more than half a century During that time she was a continuous presence on Australian stages and screens, starring in some of the country’s most beloved productions. In 2016, she was recognised with the Equity Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award. Anne epitomised what the Equity Lifetime Achievement Award is all about; recognising those special performers who inspire us with not only with their careers but also with their outstanding contribution to our industry as whole, said Chloe.
