  • Way before Europeans arrived in Australia there were strong relationships between Makassar-Bugis people and Marege’ - or northern Australia. This is Pak Haji Muhammad Jafar - a ‘panrita’ master boat builder of South Sulawesi. He passed away on 18 November 2019, a few months after this interview was shot. Honored to have just presented this clip and others to @unimelb for the last of their #nrw #nationalreconciliationweek events.

  • Feels like a looong time ago. Here’s some documentation of our mates’ (@octa.website) structure at this year’s @pitchmusicandarts A meditation on surveillance, self consciousness and performance, which inadvertently became a dance party. #pitch2020 #pitch @jack_____may

  • There’s not so many opportunities for social entrepreneurs from Australia to meaningfully connect with their counterparts across Southeast Asia. The Australia-ASEAN Emerging Leaders Program (#A2ELP) brought together 15 remarkable individuals; five from Australia and one from each ASEAN nation. Here’s a section of our video for @dfat Australia-ASEAN Council that documents the eight-day intensive program, held in #HoChiMinhCity #Saigon, #Singapore, and #Jakarta. A real honour to meet this group and learn about what makes #smartcities Search a2elp to see the full video and learn more.

  • Such a pleasure to travel through #HoChiMinhCity #Singapore and #Jakarta this week covering the 2019 Australia-#ASEAN Emerging Leaders Program #A2ELP. These are remarkable individuals with social enterprises we’ll all know about in the next few years. Inspiring to see Australia contributing to such an important space. #A2ELP #Asialink @dfat

  • More than a hundred years before Europeans established colonies in Australia, people from Sulawesi (Indonesia) had relationships with communities across Arnhem Land and the Kimberley. The so-called Macassans worked with indigenous communities to harvest and process trepang (sea cucumber), which was sold to China. They also left a deep cultural and linguistic imprint.
Over the past two weeks we’ve filmed the first stages of a documentary about these connections, speaking to the descendants of these fishermen, plus boat builders, historians, archeologists and artists across South Sulawesi. This history is well known amongst indigenous communities in Australia’s north - and a source of pride given their agency in what is Australia’s first international trading relationship.

  • We’re in Makassar, Indonesia exploring the historical trading connections between South Sulawesi and northern Australia. This is Nurul Chamisanny, Head of Makassar City Museum. When asked what indigenous communities in northern Australia have to do with her community, she held back tears and said ‘we’re the same family.’ #ausindo #makassar #indonesia #sulawesi #dji #australiaindonesia #documentary #nearnorth
