✨ New recipe: Warm Chia Seed Porridge 🥣 👆Recipe link in bio. Did you know that Chia seeds are the richest plant source of dietary fibre and polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids. They also provide a complete source of protein (they contain all 9 essential amino acids) and contains higher levels of calcium, magnesium and potassium than milk. Chia seeds are not found in any Ayurvedic classical books (they are after all from South America), but by applying Ayurvedic principles we can discern their qualities in Ayurvedic terms. Their taste is extremely mild – some describe it as almost indiscernible, others as slightly nutty or sweet. Once the seeds have been soaked, they become gelatinous in nature (high in water and earth elements) and have a cooling potency. Chia Seeds thus pacify Vata and Pitta, whilst increasing Kapha. They are therefore great to hydrate, nourish and cool. Recipes using chia seeds usually make use of the fact that it absorbs 15 times its weight in water. It is commonly prepared as an easy pudding or breakfast by soaking the seeds in water in the fridge overnight. Ayurveda generally favours warm food becuase it is gentler on the digestion and promotes healthy Agni (digestive fire). In keeping with Ayurvedic principles, I have therefore created this warm breakfast option with added digestive herbs. #chiaseeds #chiaseedsbenefits #ayurvedicrecipe #ayurvedicbreakfast #ayurvedicporridge #omega3 #highfibre #highfibrefood #glutenfreebreakfast #completeprotein #veganprotein #veganbreakfast #veganbreakfastideas #ayurvedicvegan #sourceofcalcium #sourceofprotein #sourceoffibre #vatapittapacifying #smallbutmighty #veganuk

In Ayurveda, the concept of your constitutional body type is known as 'Prakriti' (also spelt Prakrti or Prakruti). The word Prakriti originates from the Sanskrit roots 'Pra' meaning 'beginning' and 'kriti' meaning 'creation', referring to each individual's original state of being. 🌌 Prakriti is determined at conception by the unique combination of the three Dosha’s (which can be understood as bioenergetic or functional principles), known as Vata, Pitta & Kapha. Your unique bodily and mental makeup not only determines your appearance and personality, but also relates to how your body functions, its inherent weaknesses and strengths, and its predisposition to disease. Apart from the inherent weaknesses, strengths and predispositions of each Prakriti, any of the three Doshas (or a combination of them) can go out of balance in a given Prakriti to create disease. The imbalance of the Dosha's are known as 'Vikriti', coming from the Sanskrit roots 'Vi' or 'after' and 'Kriti' or 'creation'. The Doshas go out of balance due to emotional stress and incorrect diet and lifestyle choices, along with external factors such as the season and environment. 🌬️ Vata imbalance: constipation, insomnia, lower back pain, nervous tics and spasms, constriction and loss of movement and reduced memory. 🔥 Pitta imbalance: inflammatory conditions such as eczema, acne, rashes, acid reflux, loose stools, digestive ulcers, excessive sweating, burning sensations, migraines and autoimmune conditions. 💧Kapha imbalance: mucous, congestion, weight gain, slow metabolism, water retention and growths such as cysts and fibroids. By acknowledging the effect that a multitude of different lifestyle factors can have on the individual's health, Ayurveda places emphasis on the importance of modifying our habits – small dietary and lifestyle adjustments can create a powerful impact on health and the outcome of a disease. 🤓 Image: Tantra painting Image reshared from @embodiedphilosophy #prakriti #prakruti #constitutionalbody #bodytype #ayurvedicbodytype #somatotype #vata #pitta #kapha #gutmicrobiome #ayurveda #ayurvedauk #ayurvedainuk #vikriti #imbalance #doshicimbalance #doshaimbalance #tantra

I love the vibrant colours of the Ayurvedic skin herbs. 🌿 This is a mixture of 6 herbs that is excellent in any inflammatory skin conditions, for example eczema and dermatitis. ▫️Manjishtha (the red coloured herb) clears the liver and blood and in turn, the skin. ▫️Neem (light green), with its cooling potency is excellent in clearing inflammation. ▫️Turmeric (the lovely sunshine yellow) is well known for its anti-inflammatory properties and is widely used in skin conditions, from eczema and urticaria to psoriasis. ▫️Other herbs included in this mix are Guduchi, Bhringaraj and Licorice. These herbs were made into capsules for easy intake. ✨ #eczemasupport #eczema #eczemarelief #herbsforeczema #ayurvedaforeczema #dermatitis #herbsfordermatitis #herbalmedicine #ayurvedicherbalsupport #ayurvedicherbalmedicine #rasayanaherbs #rasayana #agniherbs #deepanapachana #agni #healthyagni #ayurveda #ayurvedauk #ayurvedicconsultation #herbalism #herbalist #ayurvedicherbalist #dermatology #ayurvedicskincare #skincaresolution #turmeric #turmericforskin #turmericforeczema #manjishta #guduchi

Herbs selected and hand blended by yours truly. 🤓 The Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia consists of hundreds of herbs and complex herbal formulations that are prescribed according to the Agni (digestion), Dosha (functional principle), Dhatu (body tissue) and Srotas (channels carrying nutrients to the body tissue). Mixing herbs in Ayurveda is a true art, where not only the main herbs for a client's condition or imbalance is considered, but also their absorbability by adding Agni (digestion) enhancing herbs. Rasayana herbs (herbs that nourish and rejuvenate all the bodily tissues) are usually added to each formulation, to improve the benefits of the the formulation to the body. In Ayurveda, the best herbs are considered as those that are multimodal - thus they have a positive impact on multiple systems of the body. In example, a herbal formula to cleanse your skin can at the same time improve your digestion and work as a rejuvenative tonic. Here lies the beauty of Ayurvedic herbal medicine. 🌿 Herbs are considered according to their taste, potency and post-digestive effect, which acts on the Doshas accordingly. Herbs are always given in a synergistic combination, to improve absorbability, target multiple systems or tissues and reduce any unwanted effects - for instance, bitter herbs can be drying in nature, to combat this some herbs that are moistening in nature or with a mild laxative effect may be added. ✨ Ayurvedic Pulse Diagnosis ✨ I'm forever grateful that I had the opportunity last year to join Dr Vasant Lad @theayurvedicinstitute in Albuquerque, New Mexico for a weeklong course to continue developing my skills in analysing the pulse. Once the lockdown is over, I'll be offering 30 minutes Ayurvedic pulse diagnosis sessions @nealsyardremedies in Wimbledon Village. During a Pulse session, I check the 7 levels of your pulse, which tells me about your basic constitution (Prakriti), current imbalance (Vikriti), the state of your organs, body tissues (Dhatus) and sub-Doshas. You can even feel which Chakras are currently under stress. ✨ The insights that pulse diagnosis can bring is fascinating and it is always very interesting finding something in the pulse that a client forgot to tell you about. In example: ▫️finding a spike in the Udana Vata subdosha and then upon further questioning the client tells you they regularly suffers from hoarseness of voice. ▫️feeling a spike in Alochaka Pitta, the Pitta responsible for eyesight and the client confirming that their eyes have been feeling sensitive and irritated recently. ▫️observing a Kapha spike in the stomach pulse and the client sharing that they're on a medication that helps line the stomach The observation I find most interesting is when feeling the pericardium pulse under the organ pulses. This pulse is linked to the emotional heart (as opposed to the physical heart which is under a different finger) and I find that in the majority of people the pericardium pulse can be weak, indicating unprocessed emotions such as anxiety, grief or anger. It is fascinating to ponder how blood flows around and through all the organs of the body and that the functioning of the organs can have a subtle impact on how the pulse is felt in the radial artery. 🤓 Dr Vasant Lad explains that your pulse is the flow of your consciousness. I'm in no means an expert in pulse diagnosis, as it takes a lifetime to master, however I hope with another 40 years of practise I will! 🌿 📷 by @lesleysteelephotography

Read my published article: The Menstruation Cycle and Ayurveda ✨AS PUBLISHED IN THE SUMMER 2020 EDITION OF 'HERBALIST' by @amherbalist Ayurveda considers the nature of a woman's menstrual period as an expression of her state of health, as the cycle and period take on the characteristics of imbalance present within the body.
