• |Did You Know| Most tropical forests outside protected areas have been or will be selectively logged. Therefore, it is essential to maximize the conservation values of partially harvested areas.

Given that selectively logged forests retain substantial carbon, biodiversity, and timber stocks, the middle ground between deforestation and total protection deserves more attention from researchers, conservation organizations, and policy-makers.

Improvements in forest management are possible when synergies are enhanced to retain forest carbon stocks (REDD+), assure the legality of forest products, certify responsible management, and devolve control over forests to empowered local communities.

  • |Pangolins| The scales covering a Pangolin's body help protect it from predators. If under threat, they will immediately curl into a tight ball and use their sharp-scaled tails as a form of defense.

Unfortunately, their defense mechanisms cannot protect them from illegal animal trafficking. These animals are also hunted for their meat, claws, and scales, which is why Fair&Precious forest managers have developed education and policing programmes in the Congo Basin to combat such wildlife crime.

  • |Progress| When purchasing FSC and/or PEFC-PAFC certified tropical timber, you support responsible forest management and participate in the socio-economic growth of producer countries.

This is thanks to companies that develop their timber processing activities locally. In addition, you not only benefit from a quality ecological product, you also play a leading role in safeguarding fragile ecosystems.

  • |Wood Essence| The tropical species Pao Rosa (Bobgunnia fistuloides) is a tree from the dense rainforests of West Africa. It is a relatively rare tree, and the wood is very durable and harvested in particular for its aesthetic qualities: pinkish to light red, it is used in cabinet making for luxury furniture.

As for the purchase of Pao Rosa and all wood species, Fair&Precious recommends the FSC and PEFC-PAFC labels, which guarantee sustainable forest management.

  • |Pollination| Have you ever wondered how pollination work in a rainforest ecosystem? In the interior of the forest, especially in the understory, little wind is available to pollinate flowers and disperse seeds, so many plants have developed elaborate relationships with insects and other animals. Among insects, bees constitute perhaps the most important group in number and diversity of plant species pollinated.

Bees are facing a range of complex and interacting threats, including habitat loss and the impacts of climate change. These are two environmental issues that Fair&Precious forest managers are committed to combatting.

  • |Did You Know| The world has a total forest cover of 4.06 billion hectares, of which 1.8 billion hectares (or 45%) is tropical forest (FAO, 2020, pp. 1). However, only 6.5% of the total global natural- and semi-natural production forest area in the tropics is certified sustainably managed by FSC or PEFC (IDH, 2019, pp. 5). Increased demand for verified sustainable tropical timber is urgently needed to help spread responsible forest management in tropical countries. Fair&Precious forest managers are doing their part to promote the development of a sustainable, ethical and legal tropical timber sector in the Congo Basin.

  • |Congo Peafowl| Did you know that the Congo Peafowl is the national bird of the Democratic Republique of the Congo? These feathered fowl are native to the lowland rainforests of Congo River Basin. Male peafowls, like the one pictured here, sport a deep blue plumage with a metallic green and violet tinge to attract mates.

Due to loss of habitat and hunting, they are classified as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List. Fair&Precious works to prevent the illegal poaching of these birds and other African wildlife through education and policing. 🦚
