On January 14th, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum @guggenheim and Foundation announced the Appointment of Curator, Naomi Beckwith as its incoming Deputy Director and Jennifer and David Stockman Chief Curator! Beckwith will be the first Black curator to hold her new position at the museum. In 2019, the Guggenheim hired Ashley James as associate curator of contemporary art, making her the first full-time Black curator in the museum’s history.

She will oversee the creation and implementation of the exhibition program in New York and will articulate long-range collection strategies for the growth of all Guggenheim museums. She will advise on all global arts initiatives, will actively partner with the curatorial teams at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, and will collaborate on the development of collection and programmatic strategies for the future museum in Abu Dhabi.

.

“With her highly regarded accomplishments, scholarship that contributes to building a revised canon of art history, and creative projects that connect artists of today with growing audiences, Naomi Beckwith will be a catalytic leader for our outstanding curatorial team” - Richard Armstrong, Director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation

Penn State University Press @psupress has recently released a new title, DESIGNING A NEW TRADITION: Loïs Mailou Jones and the Aesthetics of Blackness by Rebecca VanDiver @rebeccakeeganvandiver, Assistant Professor of African American Art at Vanderbilt University.

.

In Designing a New Tradition, Rebecca VanDiver presents a fresh perspective on the art and career of Loïs Mailou Jones. Considering the importance of Africa for Jones’s work and examining the broader roles played by class, gender, and politics in constructions of African American art histories as a whole, VanDiver makes a convincing case for Jones’s lasting place in American art history.
.

VanDiver repositions Jones’s work within the canon of American art, situating the artist’s production within the larger cultural and aesthetic debates of the twentieth century, including modernism, abstraction, the Harlem Renaissance, feminism, Négritude, and Pan-Africanism... [and] offers a new framework for thinking about the connection between America and Africa and the role of the African diaspora in the creation of African American artistic identity.

  • Monday (Art) Making Mondays are for artists!
.

Announced earlier this month, Yinka Shonibare CBE RA will be the eighth artist to receive the prestigious White Chapel Gallery’s prestigious Art Icon Award! Launched in 2014, the Art Icon Award celebrates the work of an artist who has made a profound contribution to a particular medium, influencing their own and subsequent generations of artists.

.

Shonibare is internationally renowned for his multi-layered work that explores issues of race, class and colonialism through his multi-disciplinary practice. Often incorporating references from Western art history and literature, his work questions the validity of contemporary cultural and national identities within the context of globalisation.

.

On Monday 22 March 2021, Whitechapel will host its first virtual gala celebration in honour of Shonibare, supported by the Swarovski Foundation. All funds raised from the gala and auction will support Whitechapel Gallery’s pioneering education and community programmes.

Barbara A. Wolanin did not leave her TV much on Wednesday afternoon, watching terrified, she said, as hundreds of Trump rioters rushed into the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol building where eight large, framed historical paintings hang. She once was curator for the Architect of the Capitol, the office that preserves and maintains the building’s art and architecture. ...For nearly four hours, the collection she had spent more than 30 years caring for was at the mercy of a mob...

.

Detailed damage assessments from the Architect of the Capitol or the U.S. Capitol Police have yet to be released. But the singular works of art that curators consider the treasures of the building did not appear to have suffered any major damage.

.

Her greatest concern was the large-scale, 18-foot paintings by Trumbull and other artists that depict scenes from the republic’s founding...Particularly vulnerable was the National Statuary Hall to the south of the Rotunda, which contains 35 statues of prominent Americans, part of a collection of 100 statues at the Capitol — two from each of the 50 states — that memorialize such notable figures as Samuel Adams, Rosa Parks and Thomas Edison.

.

...On Thursday, some historical preservationists discussed the damage, including the question of whether some of it should be left as a historical marker of the day.

Reposted • @akilitommasino At 18 years of age, I hatched an improbable plan (complete with an Excel® spreadsheet projecting hypothetical years of graduate school, international travel, and a wishlist of professional opportunities) to become a curator at a local museum with a global reputation, of which I quite literally often dreamt. 15 years later, I am thrilled to share the wonderful news that I will be joining The Metropolitan Museum of Art (@metmuseum) as Associate Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. I am deeply grateful to God my provider, my loving family and close friends, as well as my supportive mentors and brilliant former colleagues, especially those with whom I have collaborated for the past two years @mfaboston. The College Art Association’s Art Journal Winter 2020 marks the first time in the journal’s eighty-year history that an issue has been dedicated to the experience of Blackness in the United States.

.

It responds to the historical moment, including the heightened racial politics of white supremacy; the disproportionate toll of COVID-19 on Black and Brown communities; and the hypervisibility of anti-Black violence and Black death. The deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd have sparked both outrage and solidarity, reenergizing mass-scale civil rights movements. While this volume focuses on the experience of Blackness in the United States, protests worldwide have demonstrated that the struggle is shared.
