Big throwback to projects I worked on in college today, turning recycled materials into loveable creatures and bringing new life to our refuse! Once again I am finding inspiration in the exquisite cardboard boxes on offer from @equatorcoffees 😻 Loved working on this little feline, made in honor of the #tigercollective—a community of athletes, creatives, and community builders I find myself lucky enough to be a part of. I’ve been thinking a lot about growth—the path things take, the interruptions and how they shape us, how you can guide things in a certain direction but also what happens when you just let them grow wild and stop interfering? Been spending a lot of time outdoors playing the “what do you think happened to make that tree grow that way?” game, and also a lot of time trying to guide myself towards growth and strength and health after a series of experiences that diverted my path in unexpected ways. Added 3 new wood burned Lovers to the pantheon (📸 1-3) I started working on these pieces this year while watching the presidential debates—I had so much anxiety, and felt compelled to channel that into artworks focused entirely on fiercely loving and protecting. At a time where there were (and are) a lot of things to feel a looming sense of doom about, I find it important (and necessary for my emotional well-being) to make work that embraces hope and compassion. Been spending the past few days experimenting on a cardboard box that my @equatorcoffees order came in! This was pure fun—colorful and messy with materials that didn’t feel precious, and no intentions besides not stopping until it felt done. The last photo shows what the box looked like originally (oh yeah and the ridiculously good coffee that came with it). This was relaxed and experimental and a big departure from the work I normally do, and I really needed that. My Lover series has been feeling especially pertinent lately, and I’m revisiting it with several pieces that I’m currently working on. What a dramatic reveal finally getting to ink this woodblock was! I was so in love with the low contrast aesthetic while I was carving that I never toned or inked it to see what the print would look like.... much anxiety and anticipation as the wonderful people with @biginkprints helped me ink the block and finally print it yesterday at @3fishstudios . This was my first woodblock carving and was such an unknown—learning how to use new tools while working on something so large was nerve wracking, and I had no idea if the piece would turn out! I’m so excited and relieved that the prints wound up looking great, and I had such an incredible time getting to print with other artists and see this project through to the end. Amazingly, 2/3 of the available prints sold yesterday (there’s 1 left)! It’s silly that I ever doubt this, but days like yesterday remind me that I am actually an artist. Getting to spend time with other creatives and participate in a show again reminded me that I am part of a community, I can learn new skills, my work is still evolving and I *loved* every minute of it. Months of working on personal projects and commissions alone in my bedroom during shelter in place had me feeling a bit adrift (while simultaneously also more creatively engaged than I have been in years). It was so nice to get back out into the art world for a few hours yesterday, and the positive response to this piece totally made my day. 🖤🖤🖤 I started making these Lover/ Protector beings as an outlet for my often frustrated desire to try to protect and keep safe everyone I know and love. I’ve learned over and over again that it’s rarely within my power to protect people from pain (and more often than not what people actually want is to be heard, seen, believed, supported and empowered, not rescued)—what I can do is love fiercely, with an open heart, and be a source of support when I am needed. Meanwhile these lovers are here to provide fierce, unconditional, powerful love and protection. Obviously art is an expression of that impulse, while action and followthrough give it weight. There is so much that needs to be done. My social media has been full of lovers and protectors this week, and it’s so important that we keep the momentum going long term. It’s overwhelming how much needs to change in order to build a system that supports, protects, rehabilitates and values the people it is meant to serve, and my heart is broken over all the ways we have consistently failed to love, protect, and support the black community (among many others). I am committed to donating to and supporting local programs that actively work to build up and empower their communities, provide access to art and cultural enrichment, outdoor activities, food security, medical care, education, rehabilitation, jobs training, better infrastructure and mental health care. I am joining the chorus of voices calling for change in a system that criminalizes mental health issues, addiction, and poverty, and consistently punishes the symptoms while targeting disenfranchised communities, rather than seeking ways to solve the problem. I suspect that this is not enough, but it’s a start. 🖤🖤🖤 
Finished carving this monster 24x48” woodblock for a show I’ll be doing with @biginkprints at @3fishstudios some day! The show was supposed to happen in early April, but due to COVID-19 I got a few more months to carve insane amounts of detail into this giant Monterey Pine. This was my first time wood carving, and proved to be a huge learning experience. Switching things up a bit and decided to learn woodblock carving... This is my first piece and I’m going big (of course). Working on a 24x48” woodblock for the @biginkprints show at @3fishstudios in April. Definitely a learning curve here, I’ve been figuring out how to use the carving tools as I go (which is a bit humbling), but I LOVE exploring a new technique and am excited to see how this looks printed.
