My Dad did it, my husband did it: It’s not emasculating to ask for flexible working. Or shared parental leave 👶🏻👍🏻. (Sure it’s not possible for everyone but there’s currently only a 2% uptake). There’s nothing more manly than caring for your own child. (Or the ‘fruit of your loins’ as my Aunty Deanie refers to 👶🏻🤢). And don’t be the manager that responds to a flexible working request from a guy with: “can’t yer missus do that”. (True story.) Currently men are twice* as likely as women to have their flexible working request denied. Because caring responsibilities are still seen as something ‘for the missus’. Until men and women share the burden of care and work flexibly, the Gender Pay Gap will remain a black hole of inequality. That’s why we need to hear it for the guys. To challenge a system that’s discriminating against them. That’s why @papa_pukka is stepping up in Flex Appeal because he isn’t some bumbling father figure, he wants to parent. The kids drive him up the wall but he wants to be there to tell them to pipe down. The man in this photo isn’t Matt, though, he’s just a random guy who was walking past and asked what we were doing and when we explained he said: “yeah, I’m into that.” Are you though? Does your partner work flexibly? Has he been discriminated against? Caring for a child isn’t a ‘female thing’. The swimmers play a key role as far as my loose GCSE biology knowledge goes #flexappeal #flexibleworking #parenting #justkeepswimming *2015 report by business consulting firm Bain&Co called ‘The power of flexibility: a key enabler to boost gender parity and employee engagement.
She did it. @alysiamontano challenged a sporting industry that discriminated against pregnant women. @nike has announced (swipe left) it has changed its contract to ensure this never happens again. One woman stood up and it’s changed the lives of those after her. This one’s for her daughter; for all our daughters 👶🏻👶🏼👶🏽👶🏾👶🏿💪🏻 #flexappeal #nike #challengethestatusquo #justdoit **I’ll be meeting Alysia in three weeks to do an interview for @linkedin to support others looking to challenge the system. We’ll be discussing how to keep going and how to stay strong in the face of rent to pay, a career to protect and a child to raise.**
I don’t like conflict but I can’t gloss over this. There’s no way around it, these employees, these mothers, sisters, aunties; these humans are broken. @asda’s new employee contract that offers a little more money in exchange for unpaid breaks, fewer holiday days and less flexibility is forcing those running its business into a corner. This one-way flexibility solely towards the employer has to stop. This is everything we’re fighting against. Those at the top often work flexibly, earn six figure salaries and - without real world consideration - make decisions that impact the lives of those at the bottom of the chain. And this isn't a chuck-em-over-the-coals exercise. So many companies have this ‘owner and pet’ mentality in the UK with the employee often left silenced or quietly ushered out of the building if they don’t play ball - or in this case, sign. I don’t want to throw rocks, I want to talk to Roger Burnley, ASDA CEO, and put forward the case for effective flexible working. For flexible contracts that don’t leave the employee incapable of looking after an elderly relative or risk-hungry toddler. For flexible contracts that don’t solely benefit the multi-million pound business but also benefit those making the millions on the shop floor. I want to ask him to sign the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s Working Forward pledge that alongside tackling gender discrimination, aims to promote flexibility in businesses across the UK. ASDA, Matt and I are free this week. We charge nothing. My email is
- your employees are worth having the conversation at the very least. They might not be able to speak up but 39 so far have contacted us and we have been given permission to speak on their behalf @gmbunion #flexappeal #shiftwork #asdaprice
