So as of last night - this is the latest on schooling in Uganda. (See 2nd photo) Confusing much?π (The article below should say 'P6' not P5 ... so our P6 children will be returning at the start of March) THANK YOU to those who are continuing to support our children and organisation during these strange and unusual times!! It means we can keep staff employed (and hence their families supported), and we can keep assisting our children educationally, albeit in new ways! We are also in the position to top up some of our more vulnerable school families with food support, and to continue flood relief work. π I did find it really interesting that the President stated one of the reasons for keeping schools closed was to stop children spreading the virus to the elderly, as they did not want to see a situation as happened before with the AIDs crisis, when a generation was wiped out and they were left with child-headed households. A perspective you don't really think about as someone who has not grown up in this culture. (Though it also defies logic a bit when everything else is open and SOPs, to a large extent, not being observed). On the vaccine front, Uganda is getting donated 3 million doses, and purchasing 18 million doses (which will serve 9 million people). (The population in Uganda is 46.5 million, with a median age of 16) The 'brand' being purchased is apparently easier to keep in our climate. The elderly, medical, teaching and those with underlying health conditions will be the first vaccinated.

So we're in our 3rd week into January 2021. Only our P7s are at school. The government is still not allowing other classes back. The flood waters are about the same, maybe receding slightly. So right on our doorstep (or back fence) but not inside. (What a miracle is that!) Elections are ongoing. It's peaceful here in Buliisa, but there are underlying tensions country wide. Internet access has been restored, but social media and app stores can only be accessed via a VPN. Teachers in Buliisa are continuing to prepare 'at home ' packages for Amari children in primary school, and to run group learning in villages for our P6 children. Builders are continuing to work on the new secondary block. And we are just waiting on the next presidential announcement as to what is happening with school lockdown/reopenings etc - - - - #Amari #amaricdo #Buliisa #Uganda #lockdownuganda #Ugandachildren #ugandalove

Hi All Following a couple of queries, and after some years of not doing anything, we've made some Cards available, where you can purchase a gift to be given to a vulnerable community member over here in Uganda. They are not celebration-specific, so can be purchased at any time. Details here .... https://amari-gifts.company.site/ Or follow link in the bio.

We've just finished 2 days of training with New Hope International. It's geared towards teachers but the principles are applicable to everyone, so our entire onsite staff participated. And you know its gone well when (a) staff ask for them to cone up again for more training and (b) your own children sit through most of the entire two days teaching and activities!! - - - #Amari #amaricdo #Buliisa #Uganda #ugandaschool #ugandalove #loveourschool #childrenareagiftfromgod #stafftraining @newhope_international

Dear All A HUGE thank you for your love and support for Annet (sorry - made a mistake yesterday and called her 'Angela', which explains my mystification as to why I couldn't locate any photos of her on my computer!!) We have well and truly covered the cost of surgery and will also have enough for ancillary items such as transport, accommodation, medicine, lab tests etc. You have no idea what a buzz it was getting such immediate and positive responses to my post, especially as our medical programme has been a bit dormant this year with COVID and transport lockdowns. CoRSU let us know this morning that they have had to delay the surgery for two weeks, so pray for Annet that her blood levels will remain high. Amari staff sent me this photo today taken just before she went down to Kampala last week. As you can see, the tumour has grown in size, so it really is a huge blessing that she can get it operated on. We will keep you updated as to her progress. π Marita - - - #Amari #amaricdo #amarimedical #Uganda #Buliisa #childmedical #corsu #thankyoudonors

Hi All - got a bit of a 'sudden need' with one of the children on our medical assistance programme, Angela. Angela is the neighbour of our porter David, and he bought Angela and her father to see us a couple of years ago. She has a tumour on her face, and has been under the care of the Uganda Cancer Institute for the last couple of years. UCI then referred her to CoRSU for surgery on her face. She was due to go down earlier, but then COVID got in the way, and also her blood count has been too low. She went down for a review last week, and we've just found out today, that her blood count is up, and they can operate tomorrow. It will, though, cost around about $1600 Australian. (This is about half the cost of the operation. CoRSU will subsidize the other half). We would love to be able to tell CoRSU to go ahead with the operation. If you can assist towards Angela specifically, or towards our children's medical program in general, we would really appreciate it. See profile for donation link. (indicate 'Angela' if donating specifically towards her operation, and also let me know) - - - #Amari #amariCDO #buliisa #childrensmedical #uganda #ugandalove #ugandacancer #ugandacancerinstitute #ugandachildrenmatter #thankyouforcaring

So yesterday I visited Kalata-Kalolo Junction and Songalendu to check out water levels. (Yes, still increasing!) Got the giggles when one dear old soul told us they'd buy us a tarp if the Amari property flooded! Thank you for donating to our flood relief fund - you are making a difference, and we are warmly greeted when we visit flood-affected sites. Please share this with your friends so we can supply more tarpaulins to other villages. See link in bio for donation details - - - #Amari #amaricdo #Buliisa #Uganda #ugandaschool #ugandalove #buliisafloods #helpbuliisa #helpforBuliusa

So it's been raining. Again. And the waters closest to us are now around 35m off the Amari fenceline. I (half-jokingly) said to Oliver we might have to start sorting stuff to move up to the top of the property. Jaz's comment? "Can we take the TV with us?"π

So it's raining here. Non-stop. Again. And I got to thinking - if I had to move house, pretty suddenly and without a lot of notice, what would I take with me? What would I take with me if I had somewhere defined to go? What would I take with me if I didn't have anywhere defined to move to? It may be in the coming months, if the floods keep moving inland, that I have to move from my house down here at the bottom end of the property. But I have the classrooms at the top of the property. Somewhere defined I can shift to. And it's not that far away. Many around us don't have that option. Some can move to family land further inland. Others have to relocate totally to districts of origin. And that is awkward. And costs money, especially with taxis hiking prices as they legally have to follow social distancing requirements. But then still they still cram in as many passengers as possible. At the inflated rates. Or households are staying put amongst rising waters, as they don't have anywhere, at all, to move to. (Marita)

I love, love, love rain on a tin roof. That is, I used to. Now, I listen with mixed emotions. It rained last night. Rain on a tin roof. I love that sound. And I dread it. I love the accompanying electrical storms. And I dread them. I'm cosy. Window open for a cool breeze. I love that. Lightning flashing all around, illuminating the property. Spectacular. Thunder cracking and rumbling. Awe-inspiring. I'm cosy. Others are not. Makeshift shelters. Rooves leaking in the pounding rain. Or no shelter. Making do under trees or under papyrus mats hooked precariously to verandahs. I'm protected from the elements. Others are not. My bed is well off the ground. Others sleep on rising damp. I ask myself, "Why them? Why not me?" I don't know. But, dear God, let me never take my blessings for granted. Let me not abuse my position of privilege. And let empathy guide my actions and attitudes.
