  • The Salt Lake County Department of Diversity and Inclusion have recently been thinking of more effective initiatives to help those of immigrant and refugee backgrounds feel safe and welcomed in Salt Lake City.
A few months ago myself, along side some very TALENTED local artists of immigrant, asylum, and refugee backgrounds started to help with this initiative through various art mediums. As we discussed ideas our goal was to not only tell our personal stories and personal experiences, but also hold a safe space for various diverse communities While bringing awareness to the effect the policies being put in place by our current president have on immigrant and refugee communities. Another goal was to bring to light the experiences we have as Black and brown people in America.
Together we created an arts event called Rooted; Art Away from Home that would tell stories through five different art mediums. It was amazing to be able to educate predominately white audiences about our different cultures and contributions to society through dance.
On Monday, I attended a press release where The Salt Lake City and County Mayor officially declared that Welcoming Week would be an annual week long event in September with the goal to celebrate those of the mentioned backgrounds with Rooted being included in the celebration!
Obviously welcoming immigrants and New Americans should be honored and celebrated year round and it is disgusting and embarrassing the way immigrants are treated in America I appreciate steps forward to combat concerning policies, especially through the arts. I am also grateful that as artists of color, we were able to head this arts event and where given room to Express ourselves freely through art. I am so grateful for my family's journey and I am excited to continue to tell our stories through dance!

  • Congratulations to my sweet husband for being accepted into one of the leading Civil Engineering programs in UgandaπŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰!! He has been working so hard and I am so excited for him to perfect his craft! I wish I could be there every morning to give him kisses before class, but I love being able to hear about all of his University adventures!! It is hard not being physically present for the beautiful events that have been happening in both of our lives, but we look forward to when we get to share these moments together. I can't wait to continue our education together, but for now, we will root each other on from a distance!! I love you so much babe!

  • It has been a little over 2 YEARS since we decided to date long distance and 314 Days since we put in our Visa paperwork πŸ˜ͺ
We have had to learn to nurture each other emotionally and mentally while over 8,000 miles apart. It has been such a beautiful and interesting challenge for us that has molded us into more patient and understanding partners. It is amazing how we switch back and forth between who is the comforter and the comforted. I celebrate in our constant, growing relationship with our Savior.
I am not going to pretend that we are not sad, angry, or discouraged at times. I have had to take periods of time away from large groups of people because I fear bursting into tears. I'm getting better. We are doing better. Thank you to those that have supported us through this time. I am grateful to Isaac for refusing to let me slip under ( even though I want to so badly). As we try to figure out the next steps going forward, I want to thank you for your love and patience. I ease back into the social media world with a more open and honest heart. Thank you to those who have respected our privacy as we try to make decisions that will be best for our family.
@isaacgorkey you are my best friend and the love of my life and I love who we are becoming because of this experience. Thank you for loving me through all my stages. I can't wait to continue life and eternity with you, regardless of where we are in the 🌍! πŸ“Έ@anniemayne
