Today I spoke to a few beautiful ladies that serve coffee in AMC from a small cart on wheels. They were standing next to my work the automaton leg. The work triggered memories and they told me about the pain in their legs. One of them had helped herself up the stairs one day with her butt and her arms, for she couldnāt use her legs for some time. She understood the leg being cut up and gave her inspiration as of you can replace some slices of the leg using mental power... It was a mental journey cutting all pieces by hand. It took me about 12 hours I think. Made me realize how nice it is to exercise some physical hard work. But also kept thinking about amputation and what it would mean to have to perform this to an actual human. Pffff...

For the leg automata sculpture I needed a huge leg carved out of a tree. I wanted it to be cut out of one piece. A chainsaw artist was the perfect solution and @antonklijnsmit did an amazing job! This is a leg of 150cm in size! I think it was about 70 kiloās...

This was the idea... after having so many conversations with rehabilitating people, I noticed the frequency by which we spoke about the leg. The sensations like numbness, tingling, buzzing, waving, scaling and for sure pain, had to be translated into an artwork! So there I was... thirteen years old and playing Antigone. This must have been the time where I was imprinted with my fascination for the body as an instrument. Being the close witness of the most amazing actors transform from personage into personage and back into themselves. And those costumes... oh those costumes...!
