From 1982 to 1987, the Grateful Dead performed at the Frost over a dozen times. A fan and Bay Area resident recalled his Grateful Dead concert experience in an article for the Stanford Magazine, Always a fun and wild scene. The venue was packed . . . always sold out for the Dead! I do recall when Jerry sang [Bob] Dylan's 'It's all Over Now, Baby Blue,' you could hear a pin drop.” ⠀ ⠀ While the Grateful Dead have played all over the Bay Area throughout history, some have said that the best place of all to see them was Frost.⠀

The 1970’s brought a slew of rock concerts to Frost. Infamous artists like Eric Clapton, Joan Baez, Country Joe and the Fish, Quicksilver Messenger Service and more headlined here. In fact, Joan Baez’s performance filled the grassy amphitheater with over 10,000 people! The mid-1970’s brought a memorable performance by Eric Clapton. With new album, 461 Ocean Blvd. just recently released and “I Shot the Sheriff” a rising hit single, Eric Clapton rocked out alongside legendary guitarist Carlos Santana.

In the 1960’s, Frost Amphitheater was bustling with arts festivals and jazz music. 1964 brought the first Summer Festival of the Arts, filled with 6 Shakespearean plays, Renaissance music concerts, opera, art exhibits and more. To host the plays, Frost was transformed into a magnificent Elizabethan stage. Summers had never been like this before, but this festival ensured it wouldn’t be the last.⠀ ⠀ Moving into 1965, Stanford Jazz Year brought the most legendary jazz musicians to the venue. From Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald to Ray Charles and Louis Armstrong, 1965 to 1966 was truly the year that Frost ‘got its groove’. ⠀

We are moving through the decades starting in 1941 when the SF Symphony made its debut on our stage as part of Stanford’s 50th Anniversary Celebration, with Music Director Pierre Monteux conducting. For more than a decade in the 1960’s–70’s, the Symphony performed a benefit concert at Frost Amphitheater every summer. ⠀ ⠀ Last years SF Symphony series was a must-see and we are looking forward to the years to come! Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas said it best, “Music has a unique and powerful way of connecting us, inspiring us, and building community. We are incredibly happy that we can broaden our musical community even further with the combination of the wonderful setting of the Frost Amphitheater and the fantastic musicians of the San Francisco Symphony.”⠀ ⠀ #thenVSnow #FrostMemories
