  • Luiseño Word of the Day: 'éxla
Meaning: Land, dirt, ground, soil, earth, property, territory 'Éxla is the Luiseño name for dirt or the land itself. The word can also be modified with a possessive pronoun to indicate possession of land such as someone's property or territory.
Pronunciation Tips: the ' symbol in Luiseño is known as a glottal stop and sounds like the hard break in the middle of the words uh-oh or uh-uh. An X in Luiseño does not sound like an english X but instead like a Spanish J in words like frijoles or a name like Juan. #LuisenoWOTD

  • While we unfortunately had to cancel the Gardening and Cooking Day planned for this Saturday, Solidarity Farm is still open for business and selling their amazing locally grown produce and eggs. The farm stand will be open on Friday and Saturday from 10 to 5 with some restrictions on how much can be purchased. Consider coming out to buy some great food if needed and stay safe out there!

  • Luiseño Word of the Day: Náawilash
Meaning: Marker, pen, writing instrument, keyboard, writing area

Náawilash is the Luiseño word for a pen, marker or most other writing tools or instruments. The word is a combination of the word náawi (meaning to write) and the suffix -lash which indicates a tool used for that purpose. The word can be used for almost anything used to write including a keyboard, but it is not used for a pencil which is instead named piwípwilash (a word we previously highlighted) #LuisenoWOTD
