Rationally think about your feelings and emotionally feel out your thoughts. In other words, think AND feel before you act. Doing one without the other means you’re only using one superpower to guide your life instead of two. In dangerous situations, of course, you often need to simply act and not overthink — which is a great survival instinct. Unfortunately, it spills into many other areas of our life that aren’t emergencies and then become patterns. This can be unhealthy — you don’t want to only use half of what makes you human to decide your whole life. Online messages are inferior to offline conversations. You may think you’re ‘connecting’ but without the in-person experience of exchanging complex body & verbal cues that we’ve evolved for over millions of years, you miss out on the magic of what makes authentic connection so special. It’s not that messaging on social media is bad but we can’t let it be a substitute for real connections offline — and right now it is. We’re spending more than 10 hours behind screens everyday. We average 2.5 hours on social media alone. We’re losing touch with makes us human and we’re feeling the negative effects. Let’s change that and have more conversations. Cozying up to a book & losing yourself amongst its pages is one of the most unique & enjoyable experiences we get to have & yet it seems harder & harder to actually finish a book – have you noticed that too? 🤔 I have no problem buying books I know I should read – I even excitedly peruse them whenever they magically arrive on my doorstep 2 days later. But when it comes to actually sitting down & reading for more than a few minutes, I find it really difficult to stay focused. 🙄 This wasn’t always the case – I used to be able to read for hours at a time. I remember reading all of American Psycho in two days. It took weeks to readjust & start seeing the world through my own lens again but that’s what can make books so powerful: the ability to transplant you into another world. ✨ I get it, though. Between the email, text messages, work, social media, the news, Reddit – we’re reading a lot. In fact, we’re reading on average more than any human in history. We’re also creating enough content every day to fill 6 newspapers – a 200x increase from just 25 years ago. 🤯 But we’ve lost dome depth. All of these surface level distractions and communications are keeping us in the shallow end. Whether we’re afraid of drowning, we’re too fatigued, or we’ve forgotten altogether how deep we can go, we’re not jumping off the diving board anymore to touch the bottom. Writing has only existed for 5,000 years — and reading only became commonplace 500 years ago. Yet, we’re lucky enough to be alive during a time we can reach in our pocket, swipe, & read more information than any generation before us combined. It’s unlike anything we’ve ever known, which also means we aren’t evolutionarily equipped to regulate the potentially dangerous consequences. This is one of the main reasons I created How To Become Yourself, a platform to help you become who you really are. Hundreds of times per day we have the opportunity to act out of intention or convenience. Our brains gravitate towards the path of least resistance while our subconscious influences our consciousness with reasons why we should choose convenience. This is why we constantly put things off until tomorrow. It’s why we search for data that confirms our assumptions. And why people don’t put the new roll of toilet paper on & leave it sitting on top. 🙄 But intention is so much more powerful than convenience because it puts us in the driver’s seat of life instead of yelling from the backseat. To turn it on, activate mindfulness and take an extra moment to decide how you want to respond. Personal development has had things sideways for years. That’s why New Years resolutions and diets don’t stick. And why ‘Be Yourself’ is bad advice. 95% of our choices are subconscious...meaning we don’t consciously choose 95% of the decisions we make in life. And yet, ‘personal development’ encourages us to muster up our strongest 5%, pick ourselves up by the bootstraps, and grit our way through the struggle. But what if we didn’t have to ‘grind’ and ‘hustle’ to develop? There’s a better way to become who you want to be instead of trying to live your life through force and grit, and falsely believing you can somehow stretch your 5% of conscious decision making to make all your decisions. Moods are emotional intoxication. That doesn’t mean they’re bad or wrong, of course, but before you make any major decisions, you need to ensure you’re sober. - “Sleep on it” is some of the oldest and wisest advice. We can easily forget 95% of our decisions are made by our subconscious. So when we make choices based on mood, we do it from how we’re feeling at the time, not because it’s what we actually want. - To become yourself, you mustn’t let moods dictate your life. Before choosing, pause, mindfully take note of your mood and how it may be influencing your decision — then choose. Or, simply wait until you return to baseline and then think about it.
