Our album of the week is the latest from avant folk goddess Eartheater - a layered and complex album bursting with intricate chamber arrangements guided by Alexandra Drewchin’s powerful voice. Sigur Ros frontman Jonsi leans into his newly discovered love for “gay techno” on Shiver, an album produced with A.G. Cook. The album is dynamic and surprising, harsh and soothing, and full of placid melodies suddenly spiked with panic. On her fifth solo album, Roisin Murphy finds a new role as a dancefloor truth-teller, infusing euphoric house and disco epics with thrilling expressions of desire, regret, and self-knowledge. Bartees Strange genre bending debut album fuses elements of r&b, art punk, indie rock and more.

It’s not hard to be dour in the age we’re living in, and that’s made Fleet Foxes season turning fourth album ‘Shore’ shine as one of our favorite album of the week [and maybe the year] Marie Davidson is back with a new album, a new band, and a bold new sound leaning more towards new wave-y art pop than her usual electronics. Idles and Sufjan return with slightly disappointing bloated albums, but not without a couple standout tracks on each. Hen Ogledd [Richard Dawson] delivers a freewheeling album of seamless, glorious contradictions. For the less musically adventurous, Joji and Sylvan Esso hone in on their signature sounds with relative success.

Fleet Foxes released their 4th album today titled “shore” to coincide with the autumnal equinox. Fleet Foxes frontman Robin Pecknold began working on Shore in September 2018, finishing the album earlier this month. He stated I wanted to make an album that celebrated life in the face of death. I wanted the album to exist in a liminal space outside of time, inhabiting both the future and the past, accessing something spiritual or personal that is untouchable by whatever the state of the world may be at a given moment, whatever our season. I see “shore” as a place of safety on the edge of something uncertain, staring at Whitman’s waves reciting “death,” tempted by the adventure of the unknown at the same time you are relishing the comfort of the stable ground beneath you.

Our favorite releases from last week topped by AG Cook’s “second debut album” - Apple. With ‘Find The Sun’ Deradoorian offers a meditative collection of stereo lab inflected psych rock. Slauson Malone (of Standing on the Corner) delivers a gorgeously arranged piece of jazz and Neo-soul with blissful, soft guitars and amazing percussion, complimented by effortless rapping. Hudson Mohawke returns with his 3rd wonky, bombastic project in just a 2 month span.

As world continues to morph into a hollow and unappealing spectacle, the simple world of plants remains an appealing escape. Plantasia composer Mort Garson may seem like a new discovery, but his place in the easy-listening genre was already greatly influential throughout the 60’s and 70’s. Click the link in our bio to learn more about Mort’s life and the story of how we made it to Plantasia.

Super late on this one but check the link in our bio for the 12 releases from August and July that we loved the most. And shoutout @noahhedrickart on the killer graphic. This will probably be one of the last monthly lists we put out because it’s so much easier to just keep up with adding the best new songs to the fresh tracks playlist.
