Marlowe’s preschool put together a little drive by “graduation/step up” for finishing the year this weekend and I’m so thankful she got to at least wave to her wonderful teachers. We are so proud of all the progress she made in her first year of school!

My dad, their Lolo, our biggest fan. He may live across the country but he’s still there when we need him. He FaceTimes us every single day, listens to Marlowe ramble on and makes B laugh through the phone. He makes us eat filipino food when he’s here and gets us all the ice cream we want. He truly listens and always knows what to say. I get mad at him for working too much and am constantly telling him to rest, but he just says “I’ll rest when I’m dead” and that’s another reason I love him so. So proud to be his daughter.❤️

Our guy. He’s surrounded by all things pink and princesses and puts up with a house full of sass and attitude 😂 that right there should earn him a medal. I’m forever grateful for the way he loves us. Happy Father’s Day ❤️

Took some time this week to think about what I wanted to say. Growing up, I lived in a privileged bubble. I grew up in a diverse neighborhood in Southern California, I had many wonderful black friends, and I had NO idea that racism still existed. History class taught me that we had dealt with it, and that it was fixed. I had so much to learn then, and I STILL have so much to learn. My husband and I got married and moved across the country to be teachers. Almost immediately it was easy to spot our privilege and the deep rooted racism that still existed in the south. I remember being blown away by people driving with confederate flags on their cars, Kyle having to explain to me what “Being black while driving” meant (after I had made an observation that black men drove slower than everyone else-for fear of being pulled over), being confused about white vs black churches during our search for a church home, airports that put plaques up to show that this specific water fountain was once for colored people instead of just removing the water fountain altogether (as if there needs to be a reminder), and many statues depicting white men who supported slavery. None of these things sat right with me, but didn’t know much could be done. In the classroom, my students were either black or hispanic because most of the white children went to school in a different part of town despite district efforts to desegregate them. Those kids gave me a glimpse into hardship in their community and inequality in the education system. I could tell you countless stories. One thing I remember is a conversation I had in my class about police officers. My 6 year old students expressed how much they “didn’t like” them, “they are bad”, and even, “they took my dad away”. Not all agreed, but enough did, and that let me know there was a serious problem with the system if kids so young had such views. (And yes I’m now plenty aware of how much this all exists in LA schools too.) While those instances were more obvious for me, here are some that are less. Have you ever been surprised at how well a black person spoke? (Continued in comments)

We finally finished the floor in the vintage bathroom! I literally despised this bathroom before, but now it’s SO much better. That shiny black tile was so slippery and old. We used #floorpops tiles (I’ll link in my stories) and they are essentially just a peel and stick. You peel the back off, stick on any floor surface, cut around edges with a utility knife or scissors, and caulk around any water areas. It was incredibly cheap but made for a dramatic difference. I told my landlord I needed a quarantine project and he said go for it! If you rent, it never hurts to ask to change something 🤗

Hi I’m Briar and I can tear apart a room in 5 seconds, I ask for snacks all day, I give all my dinner to the dog, and I climb anything and everything. I turned into a toddler with tantrums overnight and my mommy is tired 😜#14months #briareleanor #shesluckyshescute
