Having recently wrapped M1 Peer Pleasure Youth Theatre Festival 2019, we would like to feature the person at the heart of our festival: Charlene Haridas! This year is her 4th year as our dedicated Programme Manager, and currently she is Assistant Producer for Peer Pleasure! Here are some of her insights: . Through Peer Pleasure, I have been given opportunities to meet many interesting people, be invited into their worlds and listen to their stories. I’m constantly inspired by the theatre practitioners who kindle my imagination and enable me see new possibilities. Being surrounded by young people also keeps me young at heart and staves off the cynicism. . For any aspiring arts programme manager interested in social consciousness, doing socially-engaged work requires an open mind, curiosity, reflexivity and tenacity. Though it gets emotionally tiring at times, it is soul satisfying! 😃 . #m1peerpleasure by @artswok #wokwithus #artsmanagement #youththeatre #m1peerpleasure #artswok

The Class Room, which ran from 1-3 August, was created by three powerhouses: our Artistic Director Jean Ng, and veteran theatre practitioners Li Xie and Kok Heng Leun. Li Xie and Heng Leun were also our wonderful facilitators. . Their creation and facilitation process was what made possible the challenging of assumptions, prejudices and beliefs about poverty in Singapore in this participatory theatre piece. Without this space, many inspiring, challenging and deep conversations about this important issue would not have occurred! We are so grateful to all the participants, who were so willing to open themselves to participating, and learning from one another, as well as together. A Happy National Day to all our fellow Singaporean and Residents of Singapore! ❤🎆 We celebrated National Day earlier than usual with The Community Theatre (Beyond Social Services) at The Block Party, a play devised and performed by them as part of M1 Peer Pleasure Youth Theatre Festival. The script was built on stories from their community, stories often unheard in mainstream narratives of our nation. . With this post, we’d also like to celebrate the amazing youths of @thecommunitytheatre , who have shone as devisers, writers and actors. 💓 The result of which were powerful performances, which will stay with audiences for a long time. And our dedicated, inspiring directors Rizman Putra @manicjango and Izzaty Ishak @izyamour , for putting this together and being the backbone of this production! We would also like to thank Mr Baey Yam Keng @baeyyamkeng , Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, for joining us as our Guest-of-Honour (pictured in middle wearing black, second photo). Thank you for your kind support! Two Saturdays ago, we had our last run of the Double Bill: Wonderland performed by Anderson Secondary School, and The Ground performed by Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road). We are so proud of these two schools for putting on amazing shows, each character played with heart, each line spoken with presence. Each and every one of the youths has grown so much, and we are honoured to have been witnesses to this process! It would not have been possible without our sharp, inspiring Directors Renee Chua and Iris Chia-Khanashat respectively! We would also like to thank our Guest-of-Honour, Ms Tan Gee Keow, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Community, Culture and Youth (pictured in first photo, positioned in middle, wearing blue). Thank you Ms Tan for your support, and encouraging words to the actors. We're glad their plays spoke to you! Yesterday was the last day of M1 Peer Pleasure Youth Theatre Festival 2019! We closed it with a Community Dialogue facilitated by Charlene Rajendran, and featuring our 3 participating theatre groups, from The Community Theatre, Anglo-Chinese School (Barker Road), and Anderson Secondary School. We are so grateful to these wonderful youths, for putting in 1.5 years of hard work, and their openness to learning, and from one another. 💛🙌☀ . Aside from the youths’ own reflections about how much they have witnessed themselves grow from this process, many hopes were expressed during this session. Their hope to make changes for the better in Singapore, to strive to understand and empathise with those who are struggling and living in poverty, but above all, a desire to continue connecting with their fellow human beings, regardless of socioeconomic background. . The timeless question of: “have our plays made a difference?” was raised and discussed. What do you think? Please share with us your thoughts on this in comments below! . And thank you to all who supported and attended our festival plays and programmes! The next few days, we will be sharing our production photos on our pages! #m1peerpleasure by @artswok #povertyinsingapore #POVonpov #youththeatre #socialchange
