I got the most touching message yesterday from a sweet soul who told me she went out for ice cream with her family and was able to actually enjoy it without fear or guilt! That ice cream cone represented food freedom and healing and I could not be more proud of her! Getting to witness this is one of the absolute best things!
•
It got me thinking about my own journey to food freedom and my past struggles with food throughout my life!
•
It wasn’t until my sophomore year of college where it got really out of control. I was over exercising every day, taking weight loss pills, using MyFitnessPal to keep myself accountable to eat less and less, always bringing my own food, never eating past 7 o’clock, never eating sugar, and weighing my lettuce to make sure I was tracking the exact amount of food i was eating.
•
I am a very type A person & when i commit to something, i do it full force! I was committed to making myself happy (which at the time I thought was making myself smaller)! I saw my body start to shrink & it felt like a miracle! People at school were starting to pay attention to me and I got praised for being “healthy, disciplined & strong!”
•
Come to find out, I didn’t find happiness in this! I become even MORE self conscious, insecure and judgmental of myself!
•
Things that people don’t know about eating disorders are that it’s not about food/weight... it’s about not feeling safe in the world and feeling like you can’t trust anyone, not even yourself! It’s about an extreme, intense feeling of being inadequate. It’s about needing to feel loved and comforted but feeling unworthy of real love and comfort. It’s about feeling paralyzed by perfectionism.
•
I got professional help bc these feelings were more than I could handle on my own. Through treatment and lots of therapy, I found my joy for life, my purpose and my happiness! Everything started to fall into place and my relationships healed!
•
There is more to the story but I don’t have enough space LOL but I will be sharing more throughout the week!
