• I spent so many years in my business running without ever questioning what I was running towards.

I thought the fact that I was making really good money and that I was always in-demand with clients that it was my job to just keep up the pace.

But it took me a long time, and some perfectly timed life changes, to realize that wasn’t a pace I chose it was a pace I catered to because I wasn’t brave enough or confident enough to do something different.

But I am so grateful now to those life changes that put me in a position to question everything. They gave me the space to really question what I wanted and what felt right to me and my family.

Now don’t get me wrong, I looooooove to hustle and build and scale and grow. I love business. That has never changed and probably never will.

But now I am only willing to do it on my time and at my pace.

I’ve learned that good things take time and boatloads of intentionality. The things you slow down to get right are the things that take off in the biggest ways.

And the biggest thing I’ve learned, the thing I hope to teach to anyone who will listen is this...being intentional, not rushing or racing, might take longer to get where you want to go sometimes but when you get there it’s more peaceful and definitely more profitable. And when it does speed up and grow and thrive you are ready for it. Because you built something sustainable instead of getting stuck chasing something that isn’t.

  • I used to think there was more glory in being able to say, "I did this all on my own." But really there is nothing in that but pride.

And along with pride comes unnecessary struggle, delayed achievement, slower learning, more confusion along the way, and so many moments that we have to suffer through that are completely unnecessary.

I know now that it truly does take a village. It takes the women who teach us, the women who push and challenge us, the women who nurture us, and the women who cheer us on.

Building anything in business that truly brings joy is a group activity.

One of my favorite parts of the @abbeykyhlandco mastermind is the community we have created.

Women who inspire each other.

Women who teach each other.

Women who challenge each other.

Women who help fill in the gaps we might have as individuals.

Through our group, I have watched women who have struggled for YEARS learn, grow, and achieve in ways that they just could have never done on their own. I have watched women become empowered and evolve into something amazing. I have watched women create powerful connections and relationships that sustain them through the day-to-day hardships that go along with owning a business.

I love the coaching. I also love the "homework." But I couldn't live without the community. And even as the leader, I look at what has happened inside of me and in my business by being surrounded by these amazing women and I know I could have never have gotten where I am now without them.

  • I’ve always sucked at boundaries. Creating, maintaining, and not breaking them. It was a weakness for a really long time. I thought being available all the time to whoever might need me was part of how I served others. I was afraid to have boundaries because I worried it would make me less connected and less sought after in business.

But the older I’ve gotten and the more my business and circle of influence have grown, the more I’ve realized how essential boundaries are to being at our best and being able to truly give our best.

It took me a long time to realize setting and keeping boundaries actually make me a better business owner, a better mother, and for sure a better coach.

My coach (yes, I have a coach too) has reminded me more than once that access is not equity.

Say that with me...Access is not equity.

The voices of the world that tell us we have to be available, plugged in, and posting all the time to grow and be relevant...those voices are wrong.

The more I have been able to have the courage to live within boundaries the more I’ve thrived and the more good I have actually been able to do. True success, both in life and business, doesn’t require we be available all the time.

We have to remind ourselves over and over and over that our time and our energy are our greatest commodities and that it’s a privilege to give people access to them.

The first baby step I took into creating boundaries was having work hours. That was so scary for me at the time. But I started to realize how all my favorite and best clients were fine with them and even respected me more because of them.

One of my favorite boundaries now is taking the weekends off social media. I work all week and work hard. All week I give myself to my clients 110%. Taking the weekends just for me, my family, and the stillness I need to recharge has become absolutely essential to me being able to give that 110%. And I know now I wouldn’t be able to give the way I do to clients I love, if I didn’t take that time away from it all.

I’d love to know...Do you believe in boundaries? And how do you create healthy boundaries in your business that make you better?

  • One of the most refining experiences for me as a communications coach is raising a teenager. Its a daily crash course in everything it takes to be a good communicator.

Listening to understand, not just listening to respond. Effectively expressing our feelings in a way that is assertive and not aggressive. Not avoiding tough conversations just because they feel uncomfortable. Making sure what we say is what the other person actually hears.

I believe that good communication is at the heart of every healthy relationship. Whether that be with God, our family, our friends, or our clients.

So the next time you get into a place where you feel frustrated, overwhelmed, or have anxiety about a situation you are in with another person ask yourself...

How could clearer communication help this be better?

Sometimes its us being a better listener. Sometimes its us being a better speaker. Sometimes it bringing more clarity to a situation. Sometimes its being brave enough to ask for help.

But no matter what the situation is, more communication will always improve things.

  • Ever lost your hustle? Basically this has been me the last five years.

We moved to a new town and I felt like it was the perfect timing to start a new thing. I’d felt the tugging on my heart for a long time that my photography journey was coming to a close. After buying a business that I thought was a golden opportunity that in truth nearly financially ruined my family things have just felt stuck.

I’d go through spurts of hustle. After we closed the business we bought, I jumped back into photography and built an amazing associate team and made multiple six figures working with amazing women I loved.

But my heart wasn’t in it.

I built a consulting and education business that reached six figures in under a year.

But my heart wasn’t in it.

This cycle has gone on and on. Now don’t get me wrong, the last five years haven’t been miserable. They have been joy filled and profitable and I have been mostly happy.

But that passion I once felt for what I was doing just kept dwindling more and more.

Until last summer. Until I finally stopped trying to make things happen and I just let myself be guided. I let God gently remind me why I even have a business at all.

To be present with my family and to serve the women around me who need me.

The more I let Him guide me to that. The more the “hustle” in me grew. But it was a different kind of hustle. A healthy hustle. A hustle born from intention and purpose...not one just constantly seeking profits. The profits have still come, but not because I was chasing them.

And now here I am finally after all this time, all this wandering, all this waiting, right where I’m supposed to be doing exactly what God has called me to do.

But in a different way. No more chasing. No more endless launching. If I’ve learned anything in the last five years it’s that it’s okay to grow slow (thank you @laracasey) and that I am the girl for the job (thank you @jessaconnolly) and that as long as I show up and give a little everyday everything else will fall into place.

  • In my normal life, I never work on Saturdays. I made that choice long ago because my weekends are usually full of ball games. It’s been years (even when I was an active busy wedding photographer) since I worked on Saturdays. I just don’t do it. Working on Saturdays didn’t align with my life and my family and what was most important to me.

Then a 🦠pandemic🦠 hit.

Now here I am working 12 hour Saturdays week after week.

Life isn’t “normal” right now and I can’t pretend like it is. In the mastermind, when things really started to hit the fan, we had a big discussion about how we have to triage, adapt, and pivot if we are going to find any kind of success in this season...TRIAGE. ADAPT. PIVOT. You can call it TAP for short...which I totally just made up ☺️. When we TRIAGE we deal with the most pressing things first. We accept that there are just some things that aren’t going to happen in this season.

When we ADAPT we become flexible and adjust our expectations. We make plans to meet the situation instead of being frustrated because the situation doesn’t fit into our plans.

When we PIVOT we make changes that lead to success right now. We find new ways to be productive. We get scrappy!

And for me that means working on Saturdays because it’s the day when I can get the most done and not be annoyed or frustrated because of all the interruptions. Dad steps up and runs the show so I can get my stuff.

So what can you do?

How can you TRIAGE? ADAPT? PIVOT?

And how can I help? Seriously! Comment below or message me. I’m one of those people who actually responds to everyone ☺️ #communityovercompetition #coronavirus #corona #keepmovingforward #supportingsmallbusinesses #triage #adapt #pivot #creatives #creativesatwork #femaleentrepreneur #creativeentrepreneur #ladypreneur #clickinmoms #mompreneur #mompreneurlife #entrepreneur
