Year 1 switched into author mode this week ✏️πŸ”₯

After designing and building their own clay creatures, pupils took on the real challenge… writing clear, step by step instructions so someone else could recreate them exactly.

This is writing with purpose. Using our Writing Framework, children rehearsed sentences aloud, applied the SAY, WRITE, READ routine and checked carefully for capital letters and full stops. They sequenced their ideas, used time connectives and selected precise verbs to make their instructions sharp and effective.

At Bevington, writing is explicit, ambitious and built on knowledge. Practical experiences feed directly into sentence construction, vocabulary development and independence.

From imagination to instruction. That is Year 1 writing.

Last week our Year 2 and Year 3 pupils had an EPIC visit from the creators of Tiny Hercules, Jon Lock and Nich Angel βš‘οΈπŸ“š

From live drawing on stage to sharing how a comic book is brought to life, the hall was full of energy. Pupils explored character design, sound effects, speech bubbles and storytelling techniques, then created their own Hercules-inspired illustrations. Hands were flying up, laughter filled the room and the creativity on show was brilliant ✏️πŸ”₯

The highlight? Meeting the creators, asking questions and getting books signed. A powerful reminder that stories start with an idea and anyone can be an author or illustrator.

    πŸš€βœ¨ EYFS go intergalactic βœ¨πŸš€

This half term, our youngest learners have been exploring Space through hands-on investigation, rich vocabulary and purposeful play. From understanding that we live on planet Earth, to learning how gravity keeps us standing on the ground, children are building real scientific knowledge from the very start. 🌍

We’ve explored the work of astronomers like Galileo and Caroline Herschel, discovered what astronauts wear to survive beyond our atmosphere, learned about the International Space Station, and found out how the Mars Rover Perseverance is searching for signs of life. πŸŒŒπŸ€–

In our Provision, children have been creating galaxies, designing rovers, investigating planetary surfaces and using ambitious vocabulary such as orbit, atmosphere, planet and astronaut with confidence. High expectations sit at the heart of everything we do, even in the tuff tray.

At Bevington, we do not just look at the stars.
    We start understanding them. ✨

Watt a brilliant effort from our Year 6 legends! βš‘πŸ’‘

As part of our Electricity unit, pupils applied their knowledge of electrical current, voltage, switches and complete circuits to design and create their own light-up cards. They understood that electricity can only flow when a circuit is complete, that making a gap prevents the flow, and that components such as bulbs need electrical energy to work. πŸ”‹βœ¨

Throughout the unit, pupils built on prior learning to explore how voltage affects brightness, how switches control the flow of electricity, and how circuit components convert electrical energy into light. They planned using recognised circuit symbols, worked scientifically to test and refine their designs, and evaluated how effectively their circuits met their purpose.

A brilliant example of knowledge secured, applied and brought to life through practical science. The future of engineering is looking electric! πŸ”ŒπŸš€

Year 4 had a wonderfully successful trip to the Design Museum in Kensington this week 🚌

During a hands-on workshop, pupils explored the concepts of form and function, thinking carefully about how everyday products must combine purpose with thoughtful design. From an inventive lemon juicer to a plant-inspired toilet brush, the exhibition sparked curiosity and lively discussion. Drawing on the elements of design studied in Art this term, pupils sketched detailed diagrams before designing their own improvements to a bicycle, applying prior learning with confidence and precision.

This visit forms part of our broad, balanced and knowledge-rich curriculum. We carefully plan experiences that deepen subject understanding, strengthen vocabulary and allow pupils to apply learning in meaningful contexts. Educational visits such as this develop cultural capital, independence and critical thinking, ensuring learning extends far beyond the classroom.

Members of the public commented on how sensible and respectful Year 4 were throughout the day, representing our school exceptionally well. Ms Oudomvilay and Mr Moorhead are extremely proud of you all for showing your very best. What a fantastic day πŸ‘

πŸͺ¨πŸ” Year 3 became geologists this week as they headed into our garden to collect real soil samples and investigate what was hidden beneath their feet!

Linking to our Rocks unit, pupils explored how soil is made from tiny pieces of rock and organic matter. They carefully sieved their samples, observed closely and identified the rocks and insects they discovered. There was real excitement as they uncovered living creatures and began asking questions about why different soils contain different materials.

Building on their understanding that soil is a mixture of rock and decaying matter, children compared samples, discussed properties such as sandy and clay soil, and recorded their findings using labelled scientific diagrams. They are developing strong observation skills and thinking carefully like real scientists.

Science at Bevington is practical, precise and rooted in strong subject knowledge β€” giving children the tools to explore the world beneath their feet 🌍✨

Year 5 had an unforgettable visit to Buddhapadipa Temple 🌿✨ From exploring the stunning artwork depicting the life of Buddha, to meeting a Buddhist monk and taking part in guided meditation, pupils immersed themselves fully in a place of calm, reflection and cultural significance.

Visits like this sit within our wider curriculum offer, where learning is brought to life beyond the classroom. In Religious Education, pupils follow a carefully sequenced, knowledge-rich curriculum that builds deep understanding of beliefs, practices and worldviews. First-hand experiences help pupils connect key concepts, use subject-specific vocabulary confidently and develop thoughtful respect for different faiths and traditions.

Year 5 developed a strong understanding of plant reproduction through a hands-on dissection of flowering plants. Pupils identified the male and female reproductive parts, confidently using subject-specific vocabulary such as stamen, anther and stigma. This learning reflects our knowledge-rich curriculum, where carefully sequenced content and precise language help pupils build secure scientific understanding. πŸŒ±πŸ”¬
