Year 1 explored The Day the Crayons Quit in their English learning this week. Pupils carefully observed an illustration from the story, discussing what they could see and sharing ideas before beginning their writing.

At @bevingtonw10, our English curriculum encourages pupils to build vocabulary and develop their ideas through talk before writing. By discussing the image together, pupils were able to notice important details and begin writing sentences inspired by the story.

Yesterday we were proud to welcome school leaders from Belgium to @bevingtonw10 as part of the Exemplary Leadership Programme. The visit provided an opportunity to showcase the work that has taken place across our school improvement journey, with visitors spending time in classrooms, speaking with pupils and staff, and exploring how our approach to teaching and leadership has developed.

Visitors saw how we have strengthened classroom practice through clear curriculum planning, consistent routines and the use of scaffolds to support pupils’ learning. They also explored our use of Working Walls, the focus on subject vocabulary and the ways in which pupils are encouraged to explain their thinking and engage confidently with their learning.

It was a privilege to share the work taking place at Bevington and to engage in professional dialogue with colleagues from across Europe.

Year 5 explored vector drawings in Computing by first arranging cut-out shapes to create their own images. This practical activity helped pupils understand how pictures can be built from simple shapes while thinking carefully about size, rotation and colour.

At @bevingtonw10, our Computing curriculum uses Teach Computing to build pupils’ understanding of how digital technology works. As part of this learning, pupils recreated their designs using a vector drawing program, experimenting with resizing, rotating and colouring shapes while also using shortcuts such as copy and paste to work more efficiently.

Through this work, pupils developed their understanding of how digital images can be constructed and edited using vector graphics tools.

In PE, Year 4 are developing their throwing and catching skills in netball, focusing on control, accuracy and teamwork in game situations. With Mr Dasso, we have also started gymnastics, exploring different ways of travelling, balancing and jumping safely with control and confidence.

Through our PE curriculum, pupils build fundamental movement skills such as balance, coordination and spatial awareness. In gymnastics, they learn about points of contact, strong body shapes and creating routines with clear starting and finishing positions, linking movement to our wider curriculum and developing performance, resilience and collaboration.

This week, Year 2 created their own instructions for Monster Pizzas, using imperative verbs and adverbs to give clear, precise commands. We got very creative with our ingredients, including monster slime, cobwebs and witches dust, carefully organising our ideas in sequence to make sure our instructions were easy to follow.

Our English curriculum is carefully sequenced to develop confident writers who understand purpose and audience. Through writing instructions, pupils practise commands, expanded noun phrases, adverbs and accurate punctuation, building fluency in simple present tense and strengthening their understanding of how grammar choices shape meaning.

Today, our classrooms were filled with characters, stories and a shared love of reading as we celebrated World Book Day at Bevington. 📚

Children arrived dressed as their favourite characters and spent the day exploring books together, sharing stories and talking about the authors and texts that inspire them. From classic tales to modern favourites, it was fantastic to see so many pupils excited about reading and eager to recommend books to their friends.

Moments like today remind us how powerful stories can be in sparking imagination, building vocabulary and developing a lifelong love of reading.

Year 1 have been learning their number bonds to 20 and even went outside to create their own tens frames with chalk on the playground to help us find different number bonds to 20. They showed great collaboration and resilience as they visualised and discussed how numbers can be partitioned in lots of different ways.

Our Maths curriculum is carefully sequenced so that pupils build deep understanding of number, place value and key facts such as number bonds. By exploring number bonds within 20 in practical, visual and physical ways, pupils develop fluency, confidence and flexibility with numbers that they can apply to more complex maths in later years.

Year 5 were introduced to Chinese painting by exploring different strokes using ink, bamboo ink brushes and ink stones. They then recreated a traditional ink painting dating from 1350, carefully observing line, pressure and composition to reflect the discipline and control required in this art form.

Our Art curriculum is carefully sequenced to build deep knowledge of artistic traditions across time and place. Through this unit, pupils learned that traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy use solid ink ground on an ink stone, applied to paper or silk, and are displayed as hanging or hand scrolls. They explored how Chinese paintings often focus on nature, use limited colour, embrace space and asymmetrical design, and prioritise clear, controlled brushstrokes, developing both technical mastery and cultural understanding.

Year 1 Computing in action! 💻 Today we explored the keyboard, learned how to log on independently, worked together to find a document and typed our own names. So much teamwork, resilience and growing confidence in our computing skills! ✨

At Bevington, our Computing curriculum is carefully sequenced through the Raspberry Pi Teach Computing programme, building knowledge and skills step by step from Year 1 to Year 6. We develop confident, capable learners who understand how technology works and how to use it safely, purposefully and creatively.
