Reading is THINKING! 💗 While teaching my young friends to read, I often find they are stuck using one or two strategies, and just reading to read words. Not reading to think. I remind them often about how much thinking happens while reading. SO much thinking! I also hang my strategies at eye level so that they can easily reference them. I tell them - the handyman doesn’t show up at my house with just one tool to fix something. He brings a whole toolbox full of them. Just like him, they have to bring a toolbox of strategies while reading! You can find the letters as a freebie in my store. I also have the posters if you click on @mrsbfirstgrade 👆🏻💗 (https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Reading-Strategies-Posters-3057299)
🍎❤️ I decided today to not think of all the work that I needed to do, and instead focus on my family! We spent our morning at the apple orchard, and then I went to visit my brother alone (a very rare occasion 😉) in the afternoon. Although the work still needs to be done, I know where to find it when I’m ready! What did you do to unwind this weekend?👇🏻
I am a big fan of not over-cluttering my classroom and keeping things simple. Making it easy for my kids to use/reference. Our goal is for kids to learn, right? That is why I’m loving these alphabet posters from @missmskindergarten! Simple, but effective way to display upper/lower letters, letter sound, and letter formation path. 😍😍😍 How do you decorate your room? Decide on what you display? Keep it simple, or cover it all? 😉❤️
One of my favorite jobs - Quiet Monitor! It’s a job my friends can’t wait to do, and it helps a lot. I just print sheets with my students names on them and put them on a clipboard. Then, the quiet monitor gets to walk outside of the line and put checkmarks next to friends doing a good job. They aren’t in charge of negative behavior, just positive. We do not do anything with the sheets after they fill them up...they don’t really even notice that they get put in recycling! 🤷🏻♀️😉💜 #teachersofinstagram #classroomjobs #teacherspayteachers
👋🏻 Hi, friends! I’ve started the school year with a little change, and I thought it was finally time to share it! To be honest, it almost seemed too good to be true - I needed to make sure it happened first! 😉 I was given an amazing opportunity to step away from my first grade classroom for a bit and step into the role of a reading teacher! 😬🙌🏻💗 So far, most of my time has been spent assessing 😆 Starting this week though, I’ll begin to provide interventions, offer push in support, and help teachers through student centered instructional coaching! I’m still at my same school, and get to work with students K-8. The majority of them I have already taught first grade to! This opportunity comes at the perfect time in my life for so many reasons. I’m sad to leave my classroom, but am excited to see what the future brings! I’ll continue to share all things first grade, primary, technology, and now reading. Thanks for following along...💗
I love this b and d reversal trick from @theteachertalk! I have so many little friends who need help with this, and this is a fun way to remember. It’s also easy for me while in the teaching moment...some of the other ways to remember are too hard for even me to remember! 😉💗 #writersworkshop #letterreversals #trickytricky
I sent Leo to school this morning with this adorable freebie from @mrsjonescreationstation! Having a child in school takes on a whole different perspective for me both as a teacher and a parent. I keep thinking that I want them to just love my kid. At the same time, I love my school kids even more knowing that their parents are thinking the same thing 💗 It’s important work that we do as teachers, and I’m so proud to say that it’s what I’ve chosen to do with my life!
I’m loving this new flexible seating option we have throughout our school! (The kids love it too...😜) It’s called a floor rocker - it’s basically a much fancier scoop rocker. 💚 If you want to check it out - click the link in @mrsbfirstgrade! I loooove the pencils, so I’m so excited to try these out today! Have you used them? I’ll share my thoughts tonight! 💗🖊 #schoolsupplyaddict #itsathing #teachersofinsta
Do your kids have mailboxes? 🤔🙋🏻♀️ I’ve always had them. My kids and I both add to them throughout the day. They then put all of their things in their folder at the end. This one is from @reallygoodstuff and has lasted years. When I taught two kinder classes, I had two shoe cubbies that had 24 slots each. If you don’t have mailboxes....what do you use to get papers home?
Have you read this one before?! 🙋🏻♀️😭💗 #cuethewaterworks #lovemyjob #bookrecommendation
I just love this recycling idea at Leo’s school ❤️🌈 They have five picnic tables like this! I have found being a teacher mom challenging at times. I know too much about everything and overanalyze. I’m so thankful for my background in child development, but also thankful to have found the perfect school for Leo. It’s a great feeling to completely trust someone with your child’s education. It truly brings a different meaning to my own role as a teacher ❤️ PS - If you want an instant path to Leo’s heart, just bring him BBQ chips...😂🧡 #obsessed #teachermom
Year 14 - Let’s do this 💗👊🏻 PS - Can you tell what my favorite color is? I’m sure it’s not obvious...😂 #backtoschool #firstdayselfie #teachersofig
I have finally uploaded one of my favorite year long activities for you! If you’ve been following along with me, I often post about our class timeline. I needed to teach the standard of “create a chronological sequence of multiple events” To do this, we created the timeline! It turned into so much more than that though - a great opportunity for writing, collaboration, and for my students to take ownership of our room. To help you do the same, I created a kit for you! It has explicit directions, multiple formatting options, and the opportunity for your kids to also create their own timeline book. While we are at it…it’s on sale for 25% off today with the code BTSBONUS 19 along with my entire store! Just click the link in @mrsbfirstgrade to check it out! Creating a timeline with my students is always my favorite year-long project! It’s a great combination of social studies, writing, and collaboration skills. I love it so much - that I decided to create a kit for you to be able to do the same easily! If you follow my store, I will be uploading it by tomorrow morning! 💗 (https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Mrs-B-First-Grade-Sarah-Barnett)
Do you send home a reading bag? 💗 For it to actually be effective - it’s important to teach your families how to best help their kids! I went through all the suggestions and papers that I have sent home throughout the years and put it into one simple to understand packet. 💗 Use the link in @mrsbfirstgrade to learn more about how mine works!
