High fruit firmness gives Honeycrisp that crunch we all like and adequate rainfall made them extra juicy. A couple of frosty nights are not a problem for most #MIapple varieties, but Honeycrisp is sensitive. It can be a challenge to protect this important variety from the cold, but researchers and scientists continue to assist growers by developing and honing growing techniques to improve conditions for this “diva” apple. Thank you Michigan State University researchers and MSU Extension educators!

Honeycrisps are a “diva” apple variety, meaning they can be a challenge for growers. #MIapple growers have seemed to figure out how to grow a very nice Honeycrisp despite its challenges. Amy Irish-Brown, tree fruit educator with Michigan State University Extension, says Honeycrisp quality has been excellent in 2020. Bright sunny days and cool nights in August and September were great for red color development and sugar content – two factors that make Honeycrisp stand out.

Ever wonder what makes Michigan Apples taste so great? Clear sunny days in August and September 2020 allowed for high sugar development in #MIapples. Amy Irish-Brown and other scientists with MSU Extension measure brix levels (a way to measure dissolved natural sugars found in foods) in various apple varieties. They report that in 2020, brix levels were off the charts, which means this year’s crop is boasting really flavorful, sweet apples!
