This is a totem pole of my life till now. Would you please tell me what it means about my life? * * * * * * * * * * * It's been one week since I started this totem pole. It is an exercise created by Jerry Saltz in his article "How to Be an Artist. 33 Rules to take you from clueless amateur to generational talent". You can find the article by googling '33 rules'. His instructions for the exercise are excerpted below: * * "Exercise: Build a Life Totem. Using any material on any surface, make or draw or render a four-foot-tall totem pole of your life. From this totem, we should be able to know something about you other than what you look like or how many siblings you have. Include anything you want: words, letters, maps, photos, objects, signs. This should take no longer than a week. After a week, it’s finished. Period. Now show it to someone who does not know you well. Tell them only, “This is a totem pole of my life till now.” That’s all. It doesn’t matter if they like it. Ask them to tell you what it means about your life. No clues. Listen to what they tell you." * * It's a fascinating exercise. #wip @fridakahlo This piece is 24" x 19". Oil on gesso board. I'm not sure exactly what got into me as this piece came out rather fast. In fact I was painting over a different piece that I had been working on but just didn't like. It was a painting of something that I can't remember at this point, and I know I didn't like it at all. I had worked on it for quite a long time until I just decided to give up and paint over it entirely. Something about making that decision was freeing and led to me using the brush in a way that I'm not accustomed to. I was unconcerned with whether or not what I was doing was "good" and just went with what I was feeling. Apparently I was feeling Frida. She has long been one of my favorite artists but I had not endeavored to paint or draw her until this piece. I really like it. Even though it's quite a bit different in style from most of the things that I do/have done. I'm not sure that I'll deliberately work in this particular style again. But I am happy I took this opportunity and ran with it. #fbf This is artwork I did for T-shirts commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Strauss Playhouse Young Troupe in Monroe, Louisiana. I got my start in the theatre at the playhouse many moons ago, and it was a special treat for me to design this for the celebration. I just received my new art book from @saal_digital and I couldn't be more pleased with it. The quality of the book is first rate, and the print quality of my artwork inside exceeded my expectations. Been watching a lot of old boxing on YouTube lately. Evander Holyfield was a beast with the heart of a lion. His brutal defeat of Mike Tyson is a classic. This work in progress is on a round board because boxers fight in rounds. I will post the finished piece when it's complete. #mylightwidget
