Grade 4 EXPLORING HAWAIIANA class learned about the concept of ahupuaʻa. An ahupuaʻa is a Hawaiian term for a traditional land division system that extends from the mountains to the sea, so inhabitants can benefit from the resources of the land and ocean. To reinforce their knowledge, they created 3D models of their ahupuaʻa. They combined CREATIVITY and CULTURAL COMPETENCE to complete their projects.

DISCOVER KOREA students expanded their CULTURAL COMPETENCE by learning how to make songpyeon, a small half-moon shaped rice cake which is filled with sweet fillings such as sweetened sesame seeds and traditionally steamed on a bed of pine needles. The name songpyeon stems from the use of pine needles, because “song” in “songpyeon” means pine tree.
The fruits of the students’ labor were sweet and chewy, delicious rice cakes.
