  • Last night Truckee Police Department and @truckeefire were dispatched to a wildland fire on the Legacy Trail, west of the 267 Bypass Bridge. When units arrived, there was a 50 by 50ft fire burning between the Legacy Trail and the river. Truckee Fire Protection District, with the assistance of an additional @calfire engine, were quick to contain and halt any threat of the fire to the surrounding area and neighborhood. Division Chief Brock explained that they took additional time to ensure the fire was completely out.

A witness said that he saw someone leaving the area of the fire and had taken a photo of the suspect dragging a tent and carrying a guitar case away from the scene. Officer Beers immediately distributed the photograph to all of patrol staff and the suspect was located a short time later in Regional Park.

The suspect was cooperative and admitted to starting the fire to keep warm and cook his food when it had gotten out of control in the dry, dense area he was camping in. He was arrested for 452(C) PC Unlawfully causing a fire to forest land.

IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING -> This incident highlights the importance of community awareness and how critical it is to call 9-1-1 if you see a fire or smoke in a public area. This demonstrates that even a small fire can unintentionally get out of control quickly, and having emergency services notified and respond quickly, give us the best chance at preventing damage or threat to lives.

Although it is really important to create defensible space around your home, if you choose to burn dead vegetation on your property, it needs to be permitted and follow the burn guidelines. You can read all the information here:

Great work by Truckee Fire Protection District, CAL FIRE, and our Police Department staff on this joint incident.

  • Here at Truckee PD we are proud to share that two of our sergeants have been promoted to lieutenants. Lt. Danny Renfrow and Lt. Lisa Madden have a combined service to Truckee of almost thirty years. They both bring different strengths and expertise to their new positions, but have already shown leadership and collaboration in their respective roles.

We feel extremely lucky and proud to have such incredible internal talent to fill these important roles in our organization.

Congratulations Lt. Renfrow and Lt. Madden!
