• Lovely time in Poulson Park with the boys after a smashing roast at The Sidings. Bit of footy and banter at the skate park. Always feel lucky to have been born here and able to return here a few years ago, and now I have these two to play with too. I am truly blessed. #thesidings #isleofman #chiropractic

  • Another post of cost effectiveness and efficacy of the chiropractic approach to pain management. Recently a lot of patients have been presenting to the clinic with ‘new pains’ as a result of working from home during lockdown. This 41 year old lady came in in mid August with old pains (low back, left leg, headache and sinus pain) and new pain (neck pain). Even though the new neck pain was the ‘final straw’ to get help it was her headaches (HA) that were her most debilitating problem. “I’ve had a HA almost daily above my eyes and in my sinuses for 10 years and a weekly migraine on top of this”. After 1 session her sinus pain and eye pain was gone and a further 4 sessions over the next 4 weeks led to no neck, back or leg pain. She has had a follow up treatment today and has still reported no pain. When people believe the line “most headaches have no discernible cause” you have to question where they get that belief from because, in my experience, it is not true. Most headaches can be easily treated with some very minor intervention. #chiropractic #headache #chiropractorisleofman

  • Anyone else been like this over the past few weeks or was it just me? Since the clinic closed on the 19th of March I’ve been a house husband to my 2 boys, which has been both fantastic and testing. I’m a big believer in ‘everything happens for a reason’ so have tried to take the positives out of this. I honestly thought I would have the chance to reopen in July at the earliest so this has come as a surprise. I will be contacting all patients who’s appointments were cancelled and all new enquiries. I think a lot of people have struggled working from home physically due to ‘strange desks and chairs’. Others due to a lack of physical load and movement. I don’t know which date I will be open yet. However, if you are wanting to book in please feel free to contact me at manxchiro@gmail.com, on the Facebook page ‘Back2Health chiropractic and sports injuries clinic’ (give it a ‘like’ obviously) or via text on 226262.

  • Headache. 9-month relapsing and remitting becoming unrelenting headache. This patient (51 year old active woman) presented with this profile after being wiped out from behind whilst stationary on the ski slopes the previous ski season. Her neck x-ray (lateral neutral cervical) is ‘unremarkable’. There is no degenerative disc and or joint disease evident and there is no loss of cervical lordosis (curve). In fact I commented to this patient’s cervical spine was as perfect I had seen in 15 years of practice. It is textbook for normal radiographic findings. Medical dogma would say. “There is nothing wrong here”. I know some consultants still offer the phrase “I can’t see where the pain is coming from”. Dogma can ruin patient outcomes repeatedly. On examination at my clinic it was evident that C1 and C2 vertebrae (atlas and axis) were restricted in movement (stuck/would not glide). The impact from the other skier would have created a very forceful extension force in the spine. A rapid change in pressure and angle in a spinal joint can elicit an extremely forceful reflexogenic spasming of the surrounding muscles. The headache was caused by unresolved spasm of the suboccipital muscles (myofascial pain) and the resultant mechanical dysfunction of the facet joints of C1 and C2 vertebra. This patient was pain free in 5 extremely gentle treatments. Accurate assessment, accurate diagnosis means the appropriate treatments can be applied from the first visit #chiropractic #chiropractorisleofman #thedrugsdontworktheyjustmakeyouworse

  • Pro boxer Danny Roberts came to the clinic last year with an extremely acute episode of left sided low back pain. As he came in within a week of his back spasm he was fine after 3 treatments and a bit of icing. He popped in today for a maintenance treatment before a 24 hour continuous circuit this Saturday (8am-8am!) for local charity Huntington’s Disease Isle of Man. Donations can be given at just giving page on his bio @danny_roberts_boxing
Good luck Danny!

  • Quite often a patient will present with symptoms both old and new. This lady had a fall at home at Easter and had back pain since as a result. She had no history of back pain previously. However, after spraining here left ankle 13 years ago she has been living with a burning tightness and tingling in both feet and left lower leg. Constant symptoms which have eased slightly over the years but still blighted her life. When standing she could not externally rotated her left hip or foot. The problem was obviously biomechanical as the onset was 1 day after she sprained her ankle 12 years ago. Symptoms caused by tumours or neurodegeneative disorders take months or years to develop. In 2008 she had uncomfortable nerve conduction tests which diagnosed her with a lower limb ‘sensory peripheral neuropathy’. No cause suggested. In 2016 she had an MRI of head and neck. No tumours. Still no idea what the cause was and still worrying what was causing the burning/tingling. Some of her exam findings from Back2Health are on here. She had 1 treatment, which included adjusting her sacroiliac joints. At her 2 appointment she said she can rotate her hip and left foot out fully for the first time in 12 years and the burning/tingling had reduced by 85%. She was quite emotional as this had relived her of a lot of worry. Being led to have an MRI of your head is a very worrying process for anyone. The answer to this problem was always in the spine and pelvis from the moment she slipped all those years ago but at no point had a biomechanical cause been suggested until she came to the clinic last week. #chiropractic #chiropractorisleofman #thedrugsdontworktheyjustmakeyouworse

  • 21 year old mechanic comes into the clinic with 8 months of back pain (and a ‘weird’ leg pain) after a road traffic accident (RTA). He states he feels pain everyday and it’s aggravated when he has to lift and hold heavy things at his work. Putting his spine under load is something he can’t avoid if he wants to work. What would you do? After 4 trips to his GP and a further 2 A&E he was recommended to come and see me. The images show his pain chart, his Lumbar spine range of motion and the listings I located during a part of his chiropractic, orthopaedic, and neurological exam. He had no pain in his back and was back doing light weights within 2 1/2 weeks. The leg pain finally resolved a week later. I can see why some people would perceive going to a private practitioner would be expensive however this patient spent just over £200 to be pain free. The perception of being costly is not correct. Imagine how much money he would lose if he had to start taking time off work? This inevitably happens to a lot of people who do not receive the appropriate diagnosis, treatment and advice. Office workers can often go to work and be present but not be functioning well due to a cocktail of pills (AKA presenteeism) but people, like this patient, can’t take most of these pills at work due to the side effects and won’t get paid if they are absent. Now what would you do if you were in his initial situation? #thedrugsdontworktheyjustmakeyouworse #chiropractorisleofman #manxchiro

  • Headaches are the most common neurological condition reported to the clinic. The reason Chiropractors are trained at length on headache is because you need to spot the ‘nasties’ that may cause them (eg space occupying lesion=tumour) and refer them on. However, the vast majority of headaches are not caused by anything that will kill you. They are almost always benign and anything that lasts for years and is on and off is definitely benign. Most benign headaches are caused by myofascial or joint referral into the head or face created by a history of physical trauma and/or postural strain. This patient presented with 3 years history of head and face pain. Imaging (MRI) or blood tests revealed nothing and he was going to be what I call another ‘Mystery Patient’. From the consultant saying, “Mr Smith, we still can’t find anything. You are a mystery”. The feeling of relief from finding you don’t have a tumour only lasts a short time as they still have the headache and now think the consultants must have missed something. Sounds funny but not if you’re the one with the headache. I’ve lost count of how many ‘Mystery Patients’ I’ve had. Anyway, the last photo shows the listings I found in my physical exams (things that are sore, tender, and stuck to put it simply). You can’t see these listings on an image or on any blood test results can you? This patient was pain free within 3 weeks and will come in maybe every 3-4 months for his maintenance treatment. If you know anyone who suffers from headaches and is still relying on pills and long stays off work maybe show them this post. It might be the beginning of the end of an extremely frustrating yet easily treatable problem. #headache #manxchiro #chiropractic #thedrugsdontworktheyjustmakeyouworse
