• What book makes you think of summer?

For me, it's The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks. This will always be a favorite book of mine (I've almost worn out the copy I bought in the airport years ago!) And the small ocean town setting is pure summer☀️

  • How is your weekend going? Mine is quite busy, but that's just how life goes during the summer.

I am ordering some new books though😊 Excited to read books from authors I haven't read before.

On the writing side of things, now that I no longer have a set deadline to finish my WIP, the words are coming much more freely. Some authors say a deadline lights a fire under them. I think it has the opposite effect on me. What about you?

  • I won't make the goal I gave myself for completing the first draft of my WIP.

Partly due to lack of discipline, partly due to setting too demanding of a timeline for my goal.

I think as writers we can get ahead of ourselves often. The idea for our book is crystal clear in our minds and we think we can write it with ease and speed.

But writing the words and daydreaming up the idea are too different things entirely.

And most of us also have other jobs or families to care for. Sitting in front of our computers for hours straight to write isn't an option.

Give yourself some grace. Give yourself time. And keep writing no matter how discouraged or how ovewhelmed you may feel. The book will get done, and the story will unfold in its time.

  • What book are you reading right now and what are you learning from it?

I recently finished Where the Crawdads Sing, and this book taught me a lot.... ♡People come and go, but you have control over how their presence (or lack of) control your life. ♡Nature is one of our greatest teachers if we take the time to understand it. ♡True selfless love has no time limit or prejudice. ♡I'm much like Kya and get along with animals much better than with people😆

  • Do you give yourself breaks from stress triggers?

I took a week off from social media and writing to focus on real life and take a break from staring at a screen.

I finished Where the Crawdads Sing (such a good book!). I reorganized my thoughts and purpose for my WIP so I can actually finish it.

I caught up on housework and chores around our homestead.

I figured out ways to streamline my time on social media for my work without having to be connected all the time.

And I had a weekend getaway with my little family and some friends.

Overall, I realized how much I needed a break. Not from everything, but from the things giving me the most stress at the moment.

What's giving you stress? Is it something you can step back from for a bit? Is there a way you can simplify life to reduce the anxiety? It's important to take the time to do these things to avoid burnout and keep good mental health🤎

  • Is your weekend looking to be busy or slow?

Mine is going to be a busy one. I have an insane goal of finishing the first draft of my book by the 30th and I have a ways to go. And, there's a lot of work to do around our homestead and in the kitchen too.

But I really want to find time to read some of Where the Crawdads Sing as well🤎

However, a full schedule is good. It keeps me out of my head (it's a scary place, I tell you) and in the present moment. How about you?

  • What have you been reading this week?

I have yet to start Where the Crawdads Sing😭 There just hasn't been any time to sit down with a book this week.

Well, maybe there has been, but the days have been so busy around the homestead I end up going to bed early instead of reading. Hoping to start tonight🤎

  • The third installment to my blog series Letting Go and Going with His Flow is now up on my site.

This time, it's all about the messiness of motherhood. Being a mom teaches me to let go every day.

I've learned to use pencil instead of ink when making plans.

I've learned to give my days over to God, because he has a lot more patience than I do.

Motherhood is unpredictable. Challenging. But also beautiful. It's helped me grow and learn while watching my son do the same.

So head on over to the link in my bio to read my latest blog Messy Motherhood

  • Do you have a favorite place in your home?

This is my favorite spot in the house. My little corner office. This is where I write, read, and think up crazy new ideas for our homestead (which my husband just loves, by the way😉) This is also my haven. The place where I can go when the rest of world feels like it's falling apart.

Here, I pray. I cry. I have my hot mess moments. Then I pick myself back up and continue on.

It might just be one little corner of the house, but it is also one giant slice of sanity.

  • I'm hoping to settle in and begin reading Where the Crawdads Sing sometime this weekend. Have you read this one yet?

I've only heard good reviews, although some have said it's quite sad!

I'm excited to read this one. I just wish I had it in hard copy instead of an ebook. But when I bought it, the ebook was on sale and my budget was much happier.

  • Happy Friday everyone🤎 I don't have a blog post for you this week. I've been debating posting what I had lined up for a few days but just felt like it didn't fit with how we are all feeling right now.

But at the same time, my blog series is called Letting Go and Going with His Flow. Which the title alone holds truth for us today. So here's a little word of encouragement for you if the future scares you right now👇

Not knowing what tomorrow will hold is both scary and mysterious and beautiful all at the same time.

If I've learned anything this year so far, it's to let go and let God. He is our ultimate caregiver and advocate for our well being.

There are so many aspects of life we truly have no control over. But we do have control of our attitude and how we express ourselves.

So I am choosing to be grateful for every breath I take, to be kind to everyone I meet, to be a good steward of what I've been given, to be excited for the unknown days ahead, and to let God worry about the rest.

Because, as the children's song taught us as little kids, He's got the whole world in his hands.

  • Tell me, what draws you into a book? Adventure? Mystery? Deep characters? Romance?

I love stories centered around family, especially if they give me the feeling of coming home.

Maybe that's why Karen Kingsbury is one of my favorites. Her books never fail to put the focus on faith and family. And they always make you feel at home as soon as you open to the first page🤎

  • I'm looking to broaden my horizons when it comes to reading. But I need your help!

Authors, give me the title of your latest book or the first book of your latest series. And I'll put a review for you on here when I'm finished. (I don't mind preordering)

Readers, give me the title and author of the last book you read, whether you liked it or not.

I will be putting all of these into a new TBR focusing on all the recs from my bookish/writer friends🤎

But please no horror because I scare easily🙈 Seriously, the nightmares are insane!

Can't wait to read your books!

  • My son enjoyed looking at family pictures lately, so we pulled out our engagement and wedding albums to show him pictures of Mommy and Daddy.

And while looking through the books, I started thinking about how much my life changed once I met my husband.

Love teaches us many things. For me, it's taught me about letting go of my plans and following the new plans that come with loving others.

I talk about this in depth on my blog today. Go to the link in my bio to read the second part of my series Letting Go and Going with His Flow🤎

I'll be reading and writing and hopefully going out for a trail ride with my husband and our horses at some point if the weather cooperates.

No matter what you're up to this weekend, find a little time to relax and refresh. You don't have to be lazy all weekend, but a bit of rest is good for the soul💙

  • The path that lead me to where I am today was not an easy one. My stubborn will and controlling personality have lead me astray more times than I care to count.

But God in his grace has helped me over and over again to ditch my plans that aren't doing me any favors, and to cling to his plans and dreams for me.

Over the next few weeks on the blog, I'm going to show you how God used various life lessons to lead me to the life I have now.

Some lessons were hard. Some were enjoyable. All of them, I'm still learning from today. Which is why I want to share them with you.

  • Monday is for working hard and eating the healthy snacks.

The rest of the week is for working hard but maybe eating the not so healthy snacks...just kidding. But seriously.

Anyway, the sequel to my first book is finally gaining ground. After some pretty big mental blocks, the words are finally flowing💃
This means there is more time and energy for other content like blog posts!

Stay tuned for those on my website. They are coming soon.

  • I asked God where He was today,
For He felt so far away.
His response came not in words to say
But in a microburst on a windless day💨🍃
♡
Life has so many ups and downs. One day alone can send us on a rollercoaster of emotions leaving us feeling devastated and alone. We may wonder where God is in the midst of it. We may ask why he's silent to our cries. But dear friend, he hears you and is there to comfort you. You need only open your tear-filled eyes.
♡
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you...
Because you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you. --Isaiah 43:2,4

  • Thinking about getting back to my blog one of these days. I pushed it to the back burner for a while due to workload. Lately, most of my time has been spent working on the sequel to my first book, working with my agent to get my first book out to publishers, and well #momlife 💁🏼‍♀️ These haven't left much time for blogging.
♡
But those are also excuses, which I'm really good at. To be honest, I'm a little gun shy of blogging since my first blog wasn't the perfect virtual corner I'd hoped it be. But you live, you learn, and you keep doing what you have to do, right?

  • Setting goals and reading up on writing techniques today. The only way to get out of a funk is to push forward with a simple game plan. At least that's how it works best for me. So here are my goals for the next two weeks:

1. Write for 30 minutes every morning. We have many other projects on our homestead to do, so this is manageable but ensures the writing actually happens.

2. Read books only in my genre or nonfiction about writing. So I can stay in tune with the topic I'm writing and don't distract myself.

3. Spend time with my horses. This last one gives me the most peace and inspiration during stressful times💙

  • Heading into this weekend with only one goal in mind: rest🧘🏼‍♀️ Mental, physical, and emotional rest are what my body and soul needs right now.
♡
The books I write are inspirational and encouraging. They tell the stories of people going through hard times and coming out stronger in the end. They are meant to spread the message of hope and faith. But these stories are not easy to write. It takes a lot of energy and emotion to walk alongside a character going through a dark time. It takes a certain amount of faith to be able to go into the darkest parts of a character's soul and trust we both will make it to the other side.
♡
So this weekend I will be resting. No writing. No brainstorming. No researching. I will only be soaking up the sunshine and enjoying life💙

Simply reflecting on the sacrifice of our Savior on the cross on Good Friday to celebrating his defeat over sin and death by his resurrection on Sunday refueled my hope and certainty during these very uncertain times💙 And now I'm feeling even more excited about the gospel message I want to weave into my books so others can feel this same hope and joy⛪

Finding time to sit down and read and waking up early to write has been difficult for me this week. Since the weather has been getting nicer, I've been doing lots around the homestead to get ready for summer. I'm wondering how I'm ever going to find the balance between mothering, homesteading, and authoring (Is this even a word? If not, it should be👌)

My current account @katelyndianefiction will focus solely on my writing endeavors and current reads. And my new account @ourminnesotaadventure will be more of a personal just-for-fun account with pictures of my family, my animals, and nature. Trying to combine everything into one account while keeping it professional is just too hard. There are so many other fun parts of my life I want to share with you outside of books. But it will be easier to have two separate spaces for each. So follow my other account if you want to see more of my family's everyday life💙😊

  • What's your mood today? Positive, negative, happy, sad, sluggish, energetic?

Today has been the first time in a few weeks that I've had a positive and happy mindset without having to put much effort into it. It's been easy to feel sorry for the world and for myself lately and hard to keep positive. It's been hard to wake up in the morning only to face a life of quarantine and cloudy weather. But when I woke up this morning, I experienced sunshine for the first time in days. And it picked up my mood. Today, I can feel healing on the horizon. Today, I can smile knowing this too shall pass. Today, I can say--though there is still fear, pain, and sickness all around me--I can feel God bringing great and mighty works to our broken world💙

  • Do you like rainy days or sunny days?

It's a rainy day here and we've been cooped inside for most of the day. But the rain will bring the green grass and flowers so I really can't complain. Although I am anxious for nicer weather to make its appearance soon☀️

  • Do you prefer fiction or nonfiction? I read both but my preference definitely gravitates toward fiction. And I put a post up on the blog about the reasons why I love reading and writing fiction. You can read it by going to the link in my bio.

Also, hot coffee and a good book (regardless of fiction or nonfiction) on a rainy day is just about perfect 📚

Happy Wednesday, friends💙

Even while #stayinghome and #socialdistancing we can continue to live our best life. I'll be reading, writing, spending time with my little family, and looking to a bright future on the horizon 🌄

  • A photograph📸 With the click of a button we can capture a moment in time. We can look back on a memory over and over again.

Photographs and books defy time and space. For with them, we can travel back to the past, relive a memory, venture to other worlds, and maybe--just maybe--freeze time itself💫

  • Times are terrifying right now. I go back and forth between being calm to freaking out. But this morning, as Brighton and I read our Bible together, the story we read stood out to me, especially a couple verses. I put a little devotional on my blog called Promises, Provision, and Victory in Hard Times. The link is in my bio. I hope you find the promise in this Bible story encouraging during this period of doubt and fear💙

Join Karlee in the kitchen as she tries to whip up a birthday meal to remember for her father in “Karlee’s Kitchen Catastrophe.”

  • Do you work better in silence or with some background noise?
⠀⠀
If I’m writing my books, there’s complete silence. Even music is too distracting for me. But with anything else, it all depends on my mood. Usually a tv show in the background is nice during Levi’s naps so I can pretend I’m surrounded by other adults for a while....otherwise the voices in my head get rather loud and obnoxious🙃

  • What are your plans for the weekend? I’ve started rereading one of my favorite YA’s—The Fault In Our Stars ✨ ⠀⠀
I love this book because of the way Hazel and Gus venture out to live their best lives even in the face of death. It reminds me how we can find beauty and adventure in every situation. So my plans are to live my best life this weekend and every day after that💙

  • Here we are enjoying classy pb&j’s on a MUMs group outing. Time with this boy is my absolute favorite💙 I have many dreams and goals for my life, but I only want to climb the mountains if I can take him with me. If I have to sacrifice motherhood and moments like this to get there, then I’ll kiss those dreams bye bye 👋
⠀⠀
P.S. Candid shots are my favorite because they catch the real feels of a memory✨

I’m even thankful for his opinionated attitude. May I never take a single moment for granted. And—even in the midst of tantrums and hard times—let me always remember how much I love him and how badly I prayed for him. Tomorrow is never promised so let me make the most of motherhood today🤱

  • Have you ever felt like life couldn’t get any worse? I think we’ve all been there 🙋‍♀️
⠀⠀
My current WIP centers around this very issue. When I started the outline I kept thinking of the quote “It’s always darkest before the dawn.” Sometimes we go through a dark time that we think will be the end of us. But then suddenly, a small ray of light bursts through. Then another. And another. Until the dark of night is banished and light brightens our path 🌅
⠀⠀
This story is taking me on a crazy journey with a character who’s put to the ultimate test of faith during her darkest hour. I love where it’s going and pray it can be an encouragement for someone reading it one day 🙏🏻

  • Happy birthday to the best dog ever 🎉 He is loyal—although it comes across as clingy and needy😉 He loves being outside but only if we’re out there with him. Otherwise, the couch is his throne. It feels like yesterday when we brought this gangly puppy home from the rescue. Fast forward six years (and add about 75 pounds 🤦‍♀️) and he’s still the happy go lucky pup we fell in love with. Here’s to you, Gunner dog🥂 Today, you get to throw your “puppy lifestyle change” out the window and have all the treats 🐾

  • The beauty of the sunrise is its monotonous rising in the same place every morning. It doesn’t need to change its location or the way it rises. No, it rises with the same motions every day. And yet, we still find the sun’s rising breathtaking and magical. I think this shows us how we can rise to our purpose in life from the place we are right now. We don’t need a different job or a different home or a bigger income. We need only rise with the same confidence as the sun, in the place God has us at this very moment 🌅

  • Motherhood changes the entire concept of time. Before my son, I read multiple books in one week. Now, it takes multiple weeks to finish one book!
⠀⠀
All of life can be like this. For a season your time and attention is consumed with one thing, and the next—well, you find yourself in the midst of new priorities. No big deal! Embrace the change and enjoy the moments you do get to spend with your old love💙

  • Missing warm weather and long rides on this guy 🐎 Riding and being outdoors gives me a lot of inspiration and triggers for storylines and characters while being cooped up in house can really kill those creative vibes.
⠀⠀
What keeps your mind entertained (besides Netflix) and creative juices flowing when you’re stuck inside?

  • Hey all, my first Character Story is here! 💃
⠀⠀
I’m not going to lie to you, my nerves are on fire. I have never felt comfortable sharing my writing with others 🙈 I know, I know. Crazy thinking for someone who wants to be a published author. But revealing my writings is like showing you my diary—even if it’s not my own life I’m sharing with you.
⠀⠀
My characters have become family to me. But I want them to be family to you, too. So here goes nothing.
⠀⠀
Go to the link in my bio to read a small snippet from the life of my female lead 💙 It’s just a teaser so not too long but gives you a small taste of what’s to come.

  • The first weekend Brighton and I dated, he spent what seemed like forever hunched over an ancient typewriter in the corner of our friend’s apartment. Finally, he came back with this three-word note. ⠀⠀
As he handed it to me he said, “I wanted to write more, but typewriters aren’t as easy to use as I thought.” 😂😂
⠀⠀
These three words hold more value to me than the most extravagant gift he could buy because of the romantic moment he wanted to create. So I lamented it and continue to use it as my bookmark years later💙

Do you keep special notes and cards from years past?

  • To quote one of Levi’s favorite books— “Frosty fur! Brr, brr, brr! In January snow.” ⛄️ The book is called When Lucy Goes Out Walking: A Puppy’s First Year by Ashley Wolff if you’re looking for a fun children’s book about a puppy 🐶

  • Spending the weekend with one of my new favorite authors! If you love a book starring a character with a deep and tragic story who must overcome the pains of the past in order to accept love and a future then The MacDonald Family Trilogy by @carlalaureanoauthor is for you 🔥 Start with Five Days in Skye and then prepare your heart strings for London Tides 😍😭🤗 I’m so in love with this series. I can’t wait for the third and final one to release.

  • New year. Shorter hair. Oh, and a new author website/blog 💻 Annnd a welcoming post for you all to read. Go check out the link in my bio to give it a read.
⠀⠀
If you’ve been around since my first blog, this one is quite a bit different. If you’re new, well good! My first blog wasn’t my favorite. Hoping to stay focused on my main goal (writing inspiring fiction) instead of being sidetracked with other topics! 💙🙈

  • The holidays were a good excuse for a break since agents usually don’t take new queries until the new year. But now it’s time to get back to work. Lucky for me, cold Minnesota weather sets in this weekend so I’ll be able to get cozy and work toward my publishing goals during Levi’s nap times 🤓 Hoping this is the year my book makes it into the hands of an agent!🤞🏻A writer friend of mine knows someone who received 149 rejections before getting a contract😱 BUT his book is now an international bestseller.

I will not give up. I will not give up. I will not give up.
