Rainy day shelter at home sketches. Made another fresh batch of plant pigments that includes red beet, purple corn, black walnut, and blue spirulina. Making pansy tincture! Read wild pansies are good for the heart. The ones I’m using are cultivated pansies. They are edible and frequently used to decorate food and cakes. The tincture so far is a lovely purple color. #pansiesflowers #herbaltinctures #edibleflowers

Another woodpecker sighting!! This is a Nuttall’s Woodpecker, found mostly in CA with a small range down to Baja. Like the acorn woodpeckers, they hang out in oak woodlands but eat insects instead of acorns. This one is a male because they have the red heads. There is a family of acorn woodpeckers near my house that live in the palm trees. I love hearing their gregarious calls and them drumming holes in the trees for storing acorns. Rarely seen on the ground, I was lucky I had my camera on me to take this very intriguing photo of the family (group of woodpeckers are called a ‘descent’. #acornwoodpecker #urbanwildlife #woodpeckers
