• A few years ago, my girlfriend @stellarbuffoon introduced me to the YouTube channel @simplynailogical. More recently, the podcast version, @simplypodlogical, introduced both of us to the concept of Beaver Tails, a noted Canadian delicacy. Since I've not done any proper cooking in ages, I thought I'd give them a try. Made a few mistakes in the process, but they turned out OK (albeit with a subtle yet lingering aroma of yeast?). Made a full batch of the Maple Syrup buttercream rather than coating with cinnamon sugar, and this may have been another mistake.   • This strange, unappetising clump of beige is an experiment in making Maple Syrup buttercream icing. I found a recipe that asked for salt to be added to a mixture made with unsalted butter and figured I'd try cutting out the middle-man by just using salted butter. Can confirm it tastes delicious. Subtle, but definitely Maple Syrup flavoured. Larger batch to come... But you may be wondering WHY make Maple Syrup buttercream?.   • @stellarbuffoon and I split cooking duties on this week's @goustocooking box, since there were a couple she was particularly keen to make. The Jamaican Squash & Coconut stew fell to me and worked out quite well (not least because the Squash part was already diced). I think, in retrospect, the stew should have cooked down a bit more but, other than that, and the faff of chopping coriander (which I foolishly left till last) it was a fairly easy recipe. Topped with perhaps a little too much #springonion, I gather from @stellarbuffoon that it smelt quite Marmite-y, but I still can't smell or taste much... Not even such strong flavours as Marmite.

It's a really nice, easy one to cook, with the bulk of it just sitting in the oven for about 20 minutes while the rest is prepared and added in stages. I currently have no sense of smell or taste (beyond identifying if something is sweet), but @stellarbuffoon assured me this was great. #roastpotatoes #madewithnuts #meatfree #sausage #hotsalad #babykale #apple #onion #gousto #honeymustard

The basis each time was a shop-bought #chickenstock and #lentils, along with a random selection of fridge bits, just to see what it'd taste like. This is probably the first one that really worked, with bits of #bacon and #springonion. Lots more mileage in these experiments, but I'll probably only post the ones that look vaguely appetising.

    Every so often, after watching several YouTube cooking videos, I've been experimenting with #ramen. The basis each time was a shop-bought #chickenstock and #lentils, along with a random selection of fridge bits, just to see what it'd taste like.   • Riffing on the @goustocooking 10-min Meat-Free Mince Thai Larb (prepared by @stellarbuffoon from that week's selection), there was a mixture of fresh & frozen ingredients here. Frozen coriander coupled with fresh mint, frozen ginger paste with freshly pressed garlic. We also had Quorn mince in the freezer, which I attempted to spice up with a dusting of smoked paprika (not enough). Since it was prepared without the chilli last time, I figured I'd risk some this time if it meant it would be less bland.
