#FactFriday is all about CO2 and Rampion this week. Through 2020 every 18 hours, each Rampion turbine saved it's weight in CO2 being emitted in to the atmosphere That is a lot of CO2! 💚💚 Comparison to CO2 from electricity generated by fossil fuels #climatechange #windenergy

2020 wasn’t all bad, no seriously! It was a record breaking year for wind power and of coal-free electricity generation. Wind power broke records several times in 2020, and on the 26th of August 60% of Britain’s electricity was wind generated. 2020 was Britain’s greenest year for electricity. For 68 days in spring and early summer coal wasn’t used at all to generate Britain’s electricity. In total during 2020 Britain was powered coal free for 5,147 hours, more than 214 days! 2020 records: • Dec 18 – highest ever level of wind power (17.2GW) • Aug 26 – highest ever share of wind power (59.9%) • May 30 – highest ever share of solar power (34%) • May 24 – lowest ever carbon intensity (46 gCO2/kWh) • May – greenest month on record (143 gCO2/kWh) • Apr 20 – highest ever level of solar power (9.7GW) • Apr 10—Jun 16 – longest ever GB coal-free period • Total coal-free hours: 5,147 hours We won’t pretend 2020 was the finest year ever, but lockdown enabled a greener summer and points to a greener future, let’s make 2021 greener still. https://www.nationalgrideso.com/news/record-breaking-2020-becomes-greenest-year-britains-electricity https://energy.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/renewable/britain-sees-greenest-year-for-electricity-in-2020-national-grid/80224888 #rampionvisitorcentre #brightonandhove #shorehambysea #worthing #brightonseafront #windpower #greenenergy #carbonneutral #renewableenergy #solarpower #nationalgrid #greenrevolution

It is Rampion Competition Time again. We are launching a writing competition and Zephyr, our new team member, is the star! We would love you to write a short story featuring Zephyr. The winning entries will be published in a book, so that you and our visitors can read all about Zephyr’s adventures. The stories should be aimed at younger readers and we would really like stories that include topics like electricity, windy weather, wind power and climate change. The competition is open to children in both primary and secondary school, with a winner and runner up chosen from each key stage (KS1-KS4) - four winners and four runners up in total. The same competition will also be running online, open to adults and children of all ages. The story can include illustrations, and the limit is 500 words. Entries can be submitted to visitorcentre@rampionoffshore.com and the deadline is 21st February 2021. We really hope that you and your students are excited by the prospect of writing a short story featuring Zephyr. We are excited to read them! Did you know, that each of Rampion's 116 turbines are secured in place by steel monopole foundations? The foundations weigh between 550 and 830 tonnes, are between 60 to 85 metres long, and between 5.75 to 6.5 metres wide! #Facts #FactFriday #rampionvisitorcentre #windpower #offshorewind #offshorewindfarm #offshorewindenergy #brightonseafront #worthing #engineering #shoreham

How about a fun activity for the younger (and older) Rampion viewer? Why not try making a Wind Powered Sail Boat? Link to the instructions in our Bio or head to the Rampionoffshore.com website. Inspired by Disney's Moana we tried something different, and the results were a little disappointing. Can you do better? #windpower #lockdown #funactivity #engineering #education #free #whattodowiththekids
