• SACRAMENTO LISTEN UP! This November, the most diverse electorate in American history is projected to turnout at the highest rate in an entire century. We the people are ready to to swear in a democracy that works for all of us - not just for a corrupt, white supremacist, billionaire fascist and his Wall Street buddies. That’s why ACCE leaders have led the charge to create a 2020 Racial and Economic Justice Voting Guide that both vets out Sacramento candidates and weighs in on the propositions we’ll all be voting on up and down the state.

Every single one of the candidates we endorsed has taken a pledge to reject or return any and all donations from developers, big real estate or corporate landlords, and has vowed to stand for rent control, tenant protections, and to fight to make housing a legal human right in California.

So, are you fired up and ready to vote in a more just and equitable Sacramento and California? Mail in ballots are out - cast your vote today for the following ACCE-endorsed candidates, and tell a friend! Check out the guide in the link in our bio!

  • This November, the most diverse electorate in American history is projected to turnout at the highest rate in an entire century. And while Trump tries to stoke fear, divide us across race, and bully his way through an election he knows he is losing, Black and Brown, working class families, young people and immigrants know better and we are showing up in record force to swear in a democracy that works for all of us - not just for a corrupt, white supremacist, billionaire fascist and his Wall Street buddies.

Every single one of our votes count - and in California, we can usher in a new era of progressive policies by voting down the ballot on some of the most critical issues of our time. With Prop 15, we can bring $12B a year into our schools and communities by eliminating a decades old, racist, corporate tax loophole. And with Prop 21, we can allow our communities to limit rent increases and strengthen tenant protections at a time when millions of renters are living at the brink of displacement and homelessness due to COVID.

When we vote together, we can usher in a new government that unquestionably protects renters and homeowners from the economic fallout of COVID, and stop evictions and foreclosures. We can swear in leaders that pledge not to take money for corporations, big real estate or corporate landlords. We can reclaim the money that’s ours from the billionaire class and invest it in people and the services we need to live dignified, safe and healthy lives. When we vote together, we can provide secure and sustainable income for all, house the unsheltered, give our kids the quality schools they deserve, create free universal healthcare, and so much more. Check out the guide in the link in our bio!

  • Gov. Newsom and CA lawmakers decided to go ahead and prioritize corporate landlords with a weak compromise, instead of doing the right thing and keeping all tenants housed in this pandemic.

We're going to block the courts again this October and send the message that we're taking no more business as usual! Our LA County elected officials must stop all evictions and cancel rent now!

  • "Housing is a human right! Fight! Fight! Fight!" Tenants & housing rights advocates from across L.A. gathered at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse to decry @cagovernor @gavinnewsom weak compromise COVID relief bill. We will not rest until the Governor and state lawmakers order #NoEvictions and #CancelRent !

Tenants faced LA County Sheriff's deputies as they marched to each entrance of the Mosk Courthouse, epicenter of eviction orders against LA renters. Our elected leaders must start providing REAL protections to CA tenants and stop appeasing corporate landlords!

The work toward justice is crucial, and so too is taking time for celebration and self-care in the course of struggle. Our LA tenants' march featured music, including by Marisol "La Marisoul" Hernandez, lead singer for Grammy-award winning band, La Santa Cecilia.

  • On Wednesday this week, tenants on the verge of eviction came to the Capitol to try to meet with the Governor and demand 1) an end to all evictions during the pandemic, 2) we forgive rent and mortgage debts for those economically impacted by COVID and 3) we tax California’s billionaires - who have made a half trillion since March - to pay for it.

Today however, the Governor announced a weak deal that leaves millions of Californians at risk of eviction over the coming months. See below part of our press statement on it:

"Newsom Turns His Back on Renters, Making a Deal That Could Throw Millions - Disproportionately Poor, Black and Latinx - out of Their Homes in The Middle of a Pandemic"

Newsom Perpetuates Racist Housing Policy with a Weak Deal that Opens the Door to September Evictions, Despite a Raging Pandemic

CALIFORNIA - With just a couple days left before the courts reopen, and the “eviction cliff” that threatens to displace roughly 4 million disproportionately Poor, Black and Latinx Californians begins, Governor Newsom’s negotiations produce AB 3088, a weak patchwork deal that will allow many evictions to start September 2nd with others sure to ramp up in the coming months. And, with the exception of existing laws, the deal prevents cities and counties from passing stronger non-payment of rent related eviction protections or moratoriums until Feb 2021. While the governor has issued a statewide stay at home order, the deal will allow Sheriff’s deputies to forcibly evict tenants from their shelter, all while the country reckons with the long history of police violence and racial injustice. Tenant lawyers describe the deal as one that will fail to protect thousands, if not millions, from possible eviction in the months to come.

  • HAPPENING NOW: Renters at risk of eviction attempting to get in the State Capitol in Sacramento (currently only open to legislators & lobbyists) to demand @GavinNewsom

1️⃣ Ensure there are #NoEvictions through the pandemic - not just #COVID related - while we are asked to shelter in place, we must ensure that EVERYONE HAS SHELTER. Our collective wellbeing depends on it!
2️⃣ #CancelRent - no amount of time will be enough to help people pay their rent back if their jobs no longer exist or if they have not been able to return to full employment. The full forgiveness of rent is the only humane thing to do.
3️⃣ #TaxTheRich to pay for it! California Billionaires have become over a HALF TRILLION dollars richer since the pandemic started. THERE IS NO REASONABLE REASON we would not tax them to bail out Californians who are struggling just to survive.

#ShutItDown! Come now! And click the link in our bio to urge the Governor to stop evictions!

  • A Guide to Defense Against COVID Evictions: Part 3 of 3 - Playing Defense: Going on Offense: How to Fight Evictions Through Organizing

The California courts may be opening up as soon as September 2nd - meaning that millions of Californians could start being evicted, threatening to force many into homelessness. If the legislature does not pass stronger protections for renters before then, here is how you can organize to protect yourself and your neighbors from eviction.

Until then, there is hope! #AB1436 is currently moving through the legislature and could stop the eviction tsunami, but is at risk of not passing - or being watered down.

We need to let @GavinNewsom know - while we are all being ordered to shelter in place in the height of a global pandemic, there should be #NoEvictions - period! We did our part to stay at home, now he must his part to ensure we all have a home to stay in.

Today renters at risk of eviction and the tenants on rent strike rallied in front of corporate landlord Lapham Company that received between $350k and $1M in federal bailouts while thousands of Californians are just 2 weeks away from a catastrophic eviction wave and crippling debt. In total, CA based corporate landlords and real estate have gotten $2.9B in PPP taxpayer loans. This is inhumane and unconscionable. We must pass #AB1436, we must stop evictions and we must #CancelRent !!!

  • [SWIPE] Part 3. Today rent is due and across the country as courts begin to reopen, millions of us who have lost our employment and income and have been unable to pay rent are at risk of being evicted. The police violence that is taking Black lives is the same violence that evicts us from our homes and denies us the right to shelter. No amount of time will be enough to help people pay their rent back if their jobs no longer exist or if they have not been able to return to full employment. The full forgiveness of rent is the only humane thing to do. We have the money we need, to #CancelRent for everyone who needs it. It’s time to #DefundTheRich to pay for a #RecoveryForAll and that starts first with keeping us in our homes. #BlackLivesMatter #TheRealLooters

  • [SWIPE] Part 2 of America’s professional looters. Today we expose Big Corporations and Wall Street. Since the beginning of the #COVID19 pandemic, American billionaire’s have gotten a half trillion dollars richer. While these same companies stumble over each other to share Black Lives Matter statements and donate some masks to support the pandemic, they pay little to nothing in taxes, leaving our country, our states, and our cities - deprived of the resources we need to invest in Black communities and communities of color at large. Racial justice is not just sharing a hashtag. Racial justice means redistributing resources from the Wall Street Corporations that have more than enough to our communities that are barely making it. A mere .02 cent tax on those who own more than $50M in wealth would generate $4 trillion dollars in just one decade - that’s enough money to finance free universal childcare, pre K higher education, Medicare For All and cancelling all student debt. We have the resources right here to build the #FutureWeWant coming out of this pandemic. It’s time to #DefundTheRich for a #RecoveryForAll
